FeedMore WNY - Meals on Wheels: Interest in Adopt-a-Route Team

Posted:

The level of food insecurity in Western New York has risen since early 2020. FeedMore WNY is looking for partners for its Adopt-a-Route program to deliver hot and cold meals (Meals on Wheels) to clients in need. We are gathering interest in “Adopting a Route” where Buffalo State College would help serve its community neighbors. The commitment (with eight volunteers) would require 60 to 90 minutes once a month during the noon hour to deliver hot and cold meals to residents near Buffalo State. Volunteers will work in pairs, and all safety measures will be followed by volunteers and clients. These include volunteers wearing masks, social distancing, and using hand sanitizer before and after each delivery. Also, meals are delivered to porches in a designated area, so volunteers do not enter anyone's home. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Carol DeNysschen, chair and professor of health, nutrition, and dietetics (who can provide you with a training video so you feel comfortable with the safety of the process), or Laura Hill Rao, director of civic and community engagement. Thank you for making a difference!

Posted:

Please join us for the next podcast discussion in our Podcast, Walk, and Talk Series, "The Road to Improved Health and Well-Being with Lifelong Behavior Change," facilitated by Carol DeNysschen, chair and professor in the Health, Nutrition and Dietetics Department, on Friday, November 6, from 9:00 to 10:15 a.m. via Zoom.

Want a flat stomach? A faster metabolism? Maybe to get rid of that cellulite? Well, there’s a supplement for that. If only it were that easy… But as with most things in life, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Take some time away from your desk to go for a walk from 9:00 to 9:30 a.m and listen to the free podcast "Food, We Need to Talk." After your walk, join the Zoom call and engage with your colleagues in a virtual discussion until 10:15 a.m. about how we can apply what we learned from the podcast to our own lives. The Zoom link will be sent two hours before the event.

Community Engagement Opportunities at the CAC

Posted:

A new priority for the Community Academic Center (CAC) is integrating technology access and literacy into our remote educational programs for community members of all ages. The CAC currently has engagement opportunities for students, faculty, and staff members to support our students in Buffalo Beginnings Youth and Family Program, Global Youth Leaders, Citizenship Classes, and English as a New language (ENL). In addition, donations of used, working computers and tablets are in great need and will enable students without access to technology to join our classes. Please visit the CAC website for more information about engagement opportunities including volunteering and community-engaged learning.

Beyond Boundaries Film and Discussion Series: 'The Archivettes' - November 5

Posted:

Please join the Equity and Campus Diversity Office for the final film of the semester in the Beyond Boundaries screening and discussion series, The Archivettes, a documentary by Megan Rossman (2018), on Thursday, November 5, from 7:00 to 9:30 p.m. via Zoom videoconference.

Registration is required. A panel discussion featuring Lesbian Herstory co-founders Joan Nestle and Deborah Edel and filmmaker Megan Rossman will follow the film.

“Our history was disappearing as quickly as we were making it.” With that realization, Deborah Edel and Joan Nestle co-founded the Lesbian Herstory Archives, the world’s largest collection of materials by and about lesbians. For more than 40 years, through many of the major milestones in LGBTQIA+ history, the all-volunteer organization has literally rescued history from the trash. Now the co-founders are in their mid-70s, and the group faces a number of challenges: A transfer of leadership. The rise of digital technology. A renewed call to activism in a politically charged moment. The Archivettes is a film that explores how this group came together to combat lesbian invisibility and create “a place that says yes.”

Watch the trailer.

Beyond Boundaries screenings are free and open to the public. This Beyond Boundaries screening was curated by Crystal Rodriguez-Dabney, Buffalo State College chief diversity officer, and Ruth Goldman and Meg Knowles, both associate professors of communication, and is sponsored by Buffalo State’s Women and Gender Studies Interdisciplinary Unit, Equity and Campus Diversity Office, Communication Department, and Burchfield Penney Art Center. For more information, please e-mail the Equity and Campus Diversity Office.

End-of-Semester Reminder: Students of Concern Care Team Support

Posted:

As we near the end of the semester, you may observe or interact with student in your courses, in group activities, or through other modes of communication who are struggling or may need extra support. We urge you to connect with students and remind them of the resources of the Students of Concern Care Team. Members of the Care Team are available to assist faculty, staff, and students by providing information, strategies, and techniques for working with students of concern on campus. When reports come in, our team outreaches to individual students to offer support and connect them with someone from the Care Team they can communicate with if they need help.

The Care Team seeks to identify and provide support for students in distress who may threaten harm to themselves or others. Your help in providing notice of any students of concern is essential to keeping our campus community safe. Notify the Care Team whenever a student’s behavior gives reason for uncertainty about harm so that we can investigate the situation, develop a plan for action, and follow up with appropriate intervention.

To contact the Care Team, please complete an online report form.

If you wish to invite members of the team to meet with your department or office to discuss “red flag” warning signs, ways to report a concern, legal or FERPA issues, or how to respond when confronted by a student in distress, please contact Sarah M. Young, dean of students.

As a reminder, if your concern is an emergency, please call our University Police Department for immediate response at (716) 878-6333.
