Asynchronous courses provide flexibility for both students and instructors but can lead to a sense of isolation for students taking such courses. This session will discuss strategies for increasing student engagement and interaction with classmates in asynchronous online courses.?

Tell Students: Writing Center Offering Online Tutoring during J-Term

This year, the Writing Center will offer both synchronous and asynchronous online tutoring throughout J-Term (January 4–22). 

  • Synchronous online appointments can be booked using the Bengal Success Portal and are available during the following times:
    » Monday and Wednesdays, 11:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m.
    » Thursdays, 11:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m.
  • For asynchronous help, students should e-mail their document (along with the assignment directions or prompt) to buffalostatewritingcenter@gmail.com and expect feedback from a tutor within 48 hours.

As we prepare for spring 2021, please join us for the webinar "Blackboard Collaborate Ultra Recordings," presented by Todd Benzin, educational technology specialist, on Wednesday, January 13, from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m.

This session will address how to make, find, and share recordings made from your Blackboard Collaborate recordings, whether they are made from within a Blackboard Learn course or a staff Blackboard Collaborate Supervisor account.

You can access the webinar using Todd Benzin's Training Room. Please review the BbCollaborate website to become familiar with using Blackboard Collaborate Ultra as a participant, if you'd like.

Google Chrome or Firefox is highly recommended as a browser. If you have a webcam and microphone, that's great. If not, you should be able to get everything you need as long as your headset or speakers are working.

'Blackboard Learn Grade Center' - January 13

As we prepare for spring 2021, please join us for the webinar "Blackboard Learn Grade Center," presented by Brooke Winckelmann, instructional designer, on Wednesday, January 13, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.

The Grade Center in Blackboard Learn is more than just a way to record student grades. It is a dynamic and interactive tool, allowing you to collect student submissions, record data, calculate grades automatically, and monitor student progress. You can also drop the lowest grade, display percentages or letter grades, use a weighted grading system, and much more.

By the end of this workshop, participants will have the skills necessary to use the Grade Center to manage student grades for assignments, tests, discussion posts, and more. You can also create manual grade columns for any campus-based activities or requirements you want to grade, such as special projects or participation. The Grade Center can be individualized to fit your needs to make your grading more efficient.

This workshop is suitable for instructors teaching face-to-face, hybrid, or online courses.

As we prepare for spring 2021, please join us for the webinar "Strategies for Synchronous Engagement in the Classroom and within Your Department," presented by Ashley Martin, director of student achievement programs in Academic Success, on Tuesday, January 12, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.

Did you know you can transform virtually any activity you would do in person into one you can deliver in a synchronous remote setting? During this session, you will learn strategies for improving student and staff engagement during synchronous classes and meetings. You will acquire skills that will allow you to foster learning and productivity while also creating a fun and supportive environment through the use of collaborative learning strategies, free online tools, and breakout groups. This session will be delivered by the director of student achievement programs and student staff running the programs. Additionally, participants will be encouraged to share their own advice for engaging students in the remote setting.
