Coffee with a Cop: October 6

Posted:

Please join the University Police Department for the fifth annual Coffee with a Cop event on Wednesday, October 6, from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. in the Campbell Student Union Retail Food Court.

Coffee with a Cop brings police officers and the community members they serve together over coffee to discuss issues and learn more about each other. Attending Coffee with a Cop is an easy way for faculty, staff, and students to get to know the members of University Police who serve our campus community. This is a great opportunity to chat with UPD officers to ask any questions you may have.

University Police at Buffalo State is partnering with Chartwells Buffalo State Dining to provide this community policing event.

'Introduction to the Institutional Review Board at Buffalo State' - October 21

Posted:

Please join us for the Teaching and Learning Center session "An Introduction to the Institutional Review Board at Buffalo State," presented by Jill Norvilitis, professor of psychology, and Gina Game, research compliance manager for sponsored programs, on Thursday, October 21, from 12:15 to 1:30 p.m. in Butler Library 318.

Before the review process, researchers must be sure that their project is, in fact, research with human participants as defined by the federal government. To qualify as research with human participants, the following must be true: (1) The participants must be living. Thus, oral history projects fall under the guidelines, but research involving diaries kept in the 1800s does not. (2) The project is a systematic investigation; that is, it is designed to be a study. For example, instances in classrooms where teachers ask students’ opinions on the material to gauge progress are not research; however, if that same teacher designs a study to evaluate two methods of teaching the material to see which is more effective, this would be research if the third criterion is met. (3) The project is designed to contribute to the generalized knowledge. To qualify as research, the person conducting the project must intend for it to be disseminated at some level. On our campus, we also review student projects that may not be disseminated but that meet the first two criteria so that our students will learn the process of research with human participants and because we have contracted with the federal government to do so.

Please register through the Workshop Registration System.

Applied Geography Bengal Pause: Using Drones to Collect Geographic Information - September 28

Posted:

Please join Tao Tang, professor of geography and planning, for a presentation and demonstration of research drones on Tuesday, September 28, during Bengal Pause (12:15 to 1:30 p.m.). We will watch two short videos showing drone applications in precision farming and data collection for site development, followed by an outdoor drone flight demonstration. We will meet at 12:15 p.m. in Classroom Building A205 to watch the videos and then move outdoors for the demonstration. A fall snack will be provided. This event is open to all students, faculty, and staff.

Additional Applied Geography Bengal Pause activities will take place throughout the fall 2021 semester. Each activity is a low-stress, relaxed affair (many outdoors) designed to provide you with a unique hands-on experience. Consider these sessions an antidote to Zoom! Updated informational posters can be found in the Classroom Building, Science and Mathematics Complex, and Campbell Student Union. More information is available under the “Applied Geography Bengal Pause” link on the left side of the Geography and Planning Department website under News and Events.

These activities are brought to you by the Buffalo State Grant Allocation Committee and the Geography and Planning Department.

Midterm Grading Window: October 13-29

Posted:

The midterm grading window for fall 2021 will open in Banner at 9:00 a.m. Wednesday, October, 13, and close at 9:00 p.m. Friday, October, 29. In addition to a midterm grade, faculty members can mark how regularly a student has attended a course by entering 0 (never attended), 1 (sporadic, unsatisfactory attendance), or 2 (consistent, satisfactory attendance) in the “Hours Attended” field. Midterm grade submissions for all registered students are useful as these grades are helpful for campuswide academic intervention and retention efforts.

Students will be able to view their midterm grades in Banner, Degree Works, and the Bengal Success Portal as soon as they are posted. Advisers can obtain copies of midterm grading reports for their academic intervention use through their deans’ offices.

Thank you for your commitment to our students’ success.

Data Security Setting: PCs Lock after 10 Minutes of Inactivity

Posted:

You may have noticed a slight change in how your campus PC behaves after sitting idle for a while. If your PC sits idle for 10 minutes or longer (e.g., you walk away to get lunch), your computer will automatically lock, and you will need to reenter your password when you return to your computer. This is the result of a data security setting that was enabled recently on all Windows devices designed to prevent unauthorized access. While some may find this to be an inconvenience, the goal is to keep your information safe, and the campus will continue to make efforts to improve security.

It is important to note, too, that you will not be signed out of your PC when this happens, so any applications or files you had open will still be open or running when you sign back in. We also encourage you to manually lock your computer anytime you need to step away from your desk. This can be done by pressing the Windows + L keys or by clicking the start button, clicking on your name, and then choosing "Lock."
