Support Spread the Word: Inclusion Month - March 8 and 22

Posted:

The Exceptional Education Department, Best Buddies, and the Council for Exceptional Children will host the Spread the Word: Inclusion Month campaign on Tuesday, March 8, and Tuesday, March 22, on campus. Volunteers will staff tables in the Campbell Student Union lobby from 12:15 to 1:30 p.m. as part of a global campaign promoting inclusion for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, along with all people who are marginalized.

The campaign promotes being a friend to all and welcoming individuals, both with and without disabilities, who have been left out or are alone.

Please come and show your support and sign the pledge to spread inclusion and encourage your students to do the same. We are aiming to have the highest number of pledges in the country to show that Buffalo State College is a leader in inclusion.

Beyond Boundaries - 'No Straight Lines: The Rise of Queer Comics' - March 10

Posted:

Please join the Beyond Boundaries Film Series on Thursday, March 10, at 7:00 p.m. in the Burchfield Penney Art Center's Tower Auditorium for a free screening and discussion of the award-winning film No Straight Lines: The Rise of Queer Comics (2021). The film will be followed by a discussion with director Vivian Kleiman.

No Straight Lines tells the story of five pioneering cartoonists who depicted everything from the AIDS crisis, coming out, and same-sex marriage to themes of race, gender, and disability. Kleiman provides a window into LGBTQ lives from the 1970s onward via artists Alison Bechdel, Jennifer Camper, Howard Cruse, Rupert Kinnard, and Mary Wings. Watch the trailer.

Also, please mark your calendars for the next film in the Beyond Boundaries spring series, Not Going Quietly, on Thursday, April 14, at 7:00 p.m. in the Burchfield Penney. The film follows Ady Barkan, a rising star in progressive politics, after his life is upended by a diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), or Lou Gehrig’s disease. Barkan ignites a once-in-a-generation political movement as he barnstorms across the country to demand health-care justice. Director Nicholas Bruckman documents Barkan’s groundbreaking interviews with Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, Bernie Sanders, and Elizabeth Warren. Watch the trailer.

Beyond Boundaries is sponsored by the Equity and Campus Diversity Office, the Communication Department, and the Burchfield Penney Art Center and is curated by Ruth Goldman and Meg Knowles, associate professors of communication, and Crystal Rodriguez-Dabney, chief diversity officer. All screenings are free and open to the public.
