Naming Celebration: Chicola IPDS Consortium and Christmann Family Educational Leadership Program - October 7

Posted:

From the Dean of the School of Education
The campus community is cordially invited to attend a naming celebration for the Michael and Nancy Chicola International Professional Development Schools Consortium and the Christmann Family Educational Leadership Program on Friday, October 7, at 11:30 a.m. in Horace Mann Quad.*

Much like the Woods-Beals and Hank Mann endowments, these legacy gifts are being given by faculty members and alumni to continue the work they found so richly fulfilling at Buffalo State.

Nancy Chicola, ’66, associate professor emerita of elementary education and reading, has worked tirelessly to make international education an integral part of Buffalo State’s teacher education program opportunities. A driving force behind the School of Education’s international education initiatives, Dr. Chicola led student-teacher trips to Chile, Italy, and Zambia. She also started the Nancy Chicola International Travel Support Fund to promote student research and travel. Dr. Chicola and her husband, Michael, were great world travelers. Michael Chicola, always a supporter of his wife’s work and passions, left her a legacy that she wished to pass on to Buffalo State to keep the IPDS Consortium growing and vitally important to teaching around the world.

The Christmann family has included multiple generations of teachers and educational leaders. Robert “Bob” Christmann, ’75, ’76; his wife, Karen, ’77, ’81; and his sister, Kathryn, have dedicated legacy gifts to continue the work that Bob Christmann inspired in Buffalo State’s educational leadership program, where he continues to serve as an instructor and mentor to candidates seeking to become principals and school district leaders. A career educator, Mr. Christmann is a former superintendent of the Grand Island School District and the Newark Central School District in Wayne County. He is still very active in the educational leadership arena. Karen Christmann was a special education and reading teacher for the Canandaigua City School District.

We hope you can join us as we honor the generosity and vision of these dedicated donors.

---------------------------------------------------------

*In the event of inclement weather, the celebration will be moved to Bacon Hall 117.
