Beyond Boundaries: Reception in Memory of Teresa 'Teri' Miller - November 9

Posted:

Beyond Boundaries, the Buffalo State Equity and Campus Diversity Office and Center for Social Justice, the Burchfield Penney Art Center, and the UB Gender Institute and Baldy Center for Law and Social Policy will honor the life and legacy of our dear colleague and friend Teresa "Teri" Miller,  SUNY vice provost, at a reception on Thursday, November 9, at 5:30 p.m. in the Burchfield Penney café.

Teri Miller was a cherished member of our Western New York community. She devoted her career to advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice throughout SUNY and far beyond. She worked tirelessly for criminal justice reform and led the “Lifers” group at Attica for many years. Vice Provost Miller made several films about the experience of taking her first-year law students into Attica to meet the inmates. In 2011 she organized the unforgettable conference “40 Years after the Attica Uprising: Looking Back, Moving Forward.” Vice Provost Miller was a member of an American Bar Association task force on protecting prisoners’ rights and served on the boards of the prison reform groups Prisoners’ Legal Services of New York and the Correctional Association of New York. You can read more about her amazing life on the Harvard Law School website.

We invite friends and colleagues to say a few words about Teri at the reception.

The reception will be followed at 7:00 p.m. by a free screening and discussion of Attica (2021).

Beyond Boundaries is sponsored by the Buffalo State Center for Social Justice, Equity and Campus Diversity Office, Communication Department, and Burchfield Penney Art Center and is curated by Ruth Goldman and Meg Knowles, associate professors of communication.

Buffalo State Talks Series - 'The World of Nanoscience: A Call for Maturity' - December 6

Posted:

Buffalo State alumni, students, faculty, and staff members are invited to attend the talk “The World of Nanoscience: A Call for Maturity,” presented by Saquib Ahmed, assistant professor of mechanical engineering technology and founding director of the Buffalo State Center for Integrated Studies in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, on Wednesday, December 6, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. in the LoRusso Alumni and Visitor Center. The talk is free; refreshments will be served. This event is part of the Buffalo State Talks Lecture Series.

Please register for the talk through the Alumni Association website. Students can RSVP through Bengal Connect.

Topic Overview
Nanotechnology is defined as the manipulation of matter with at least one dimension sized from 1 to 100 nanometers. With the tremendous impact on the world of “nano” already in flux and with much more to occur in the present decade, it is imperative that a holistic approach be taken to tackle this disruptive space—not only in understanding the science and engineering of a given technology but also in assessing the economic success of such a technology and judging the ethical, legal, and social implications of it as well. This is the vision of the Center for Integrated Studies in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology at Buffalo State.

The presentation will focus on recently published original research titled “An Integrated Assessment of Next Generation PV Technologies” (American Journal of Energy Engineering 11 (4) 100–109). This success milestone had brought together students and faculty members from across disparate disciplines, including mathematics, data science, engineering technology, and chemistry.
