'Beyond and Back': International PDS Showcase - March 5

Posted:

Please plan to attend the annual Beyond and Back: International PDS Showcase on Tuesday, March 5, from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. in the Campbell Student Union Assembly Halls.

Hosted by the Michael and Nancy Chicola International Professional Development Schools (IPDS) Consortium, this open house event brings full circle all the global and service learning activities completed by our students and faculty sharing what has been done and what is possible. We will hear from a selection of amazing IPDS alumni who will reflect on their experiences. Attendees will also have a chance to speak with program leaders and learn about upcoming programs and the many ways to become involved in classrooms and community centers abroad.

Please encourage students and colleagues to attend!

No registration required. If you would like to offer extra credit for attendance, please email your class information to Tamara Horstman-Riphahn, executive assistant to the dean of the School of Education, and we'll provide a sign-in sheet.

New Procurement Card Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverage Policy

Posted:

Effective Friday, March 1, mandatory use of the Procurement Card (P-Card) will encompass justified food and non-alcoholic beverage purchases from Chartwells, Wegmans, and Panera Bread. Departments currently without an assigned P-cardholder are encouraged to designate a cardholder and complete the required application. Cardholders must submit the food and beverage allowability chart, business purpose, itemized receipt, and sign-in sheet when practical for each purchase with their monthly reconciliation for internal audit. This will create more flexibility and efficiency for campus stakeholders to purchase food and non-alcoholic beverages, in alignment with SUNY policies, and campus procedures.

All cardholders will use their P-cards upon placing an order within the Chartwell's ordering system; however, their P-Cards will not be charged until after the catered event.

All events that have already been booked in Catertrax with Chartwells will need P-Card information uploaded to their online wallet by March 1 unless already submitted to Procurement (instructions on accompanying document). Once your P-Card is added to your online wallet, it will not need to be entered again for other events until the card expires and will need to be updated at that time. If you are having any difficulty in completing this process, please call Chartwells at (716) 878-4128 for assistance.

There will no longer be a need for Wegmans Business cards that are linked to state accounts. Wegmans Business cards will become inactive effective Friday, March 29.

Buffalo State Theater Department Presents 'Teach'

Posted:

The Buffalo State Theater Department proudly presents the first staged production of Teach, a new play by local playwright Donna Hoke

Five actors, three characters, one story: Ten years ago, Ken and Chris were teacher and student. Now, as principal and teacher, Ken uses a student's suspiciously high grade as license to grill Chris until the young teacher is forced to confront both past and present.

Directed by Sabrina Kahwaty, this play features student actors Jemia Bennett, Zoe Goñez, Manuel Mejia, Myshawn Sikes, and Min Zo; and student designers Jaden Browne and Shawn Smith.

Tickets available for performances on Friday, February 23, at 7:00 p.m.; Saturday, February 24, at 2:00 and 7:00 p.m.; and Sunday, February 25, at 1:00 p.m. in the Savage Theater and Communication Building's Flexible Theatre.

"Good theater starts conversations, and Teach will do just that."
Sabrina Kahwaty

Biology-GLC Seminar: 'The Complexities of Human Error' - Today

Posted:

Please join the Biology Department and the Great Lakes Center for the seminar "The Complexities of Human Error," presented by Pam Trevino, Ph.D., R.N., chief quality and safety officer for John R. Oishei Children's Hospital, today, February 26, at 3:00 p.m. in Science and Mathematics Complex 151. Attendees are welcome to enjoy coffee and cookies during the seminar.

Abstract
To err is human... but what happens when those errors can be a matter of life and death? In 1999, the Institute on Medicine published To Err Is Human, a landmark publication in which the IOM declared that up to 90,000 deaths per year were the result of medical error. Since this publication, health-care systems have been trying to understand human error and design systems that support good decision making. Unlike other industries that have found significant success in becoming highly reliable, health care continues to struggle. Between the differences between patients and the way their diseases respond to treatment, cognitive and diagnostic bias, and complexity compression, designing a safe system for patient care is complicated. This seminar will discuss the extent of medical errors, the ways humans make mistakes, clinical decision making, ways to prevent medical errors, and how system design can help protect patients from harm.
