Faculty Scholarship Series Part II - 'Know Your Impact: Using Bibliometrics and Altmetrics to Measure the Impact of Your Research' - March 12

Posted:

Please join us for the second workshop in the Butler Library Faculty Scholarship Series, "Know Your Impact: Using Bibliometrics and Altmetrics to Measure the Impact of Your Research," on Tuesday, March 12, at 12:15 p.m. in Butler Library 318 (or online synchronous).

We will discuss our library subscription tools that will assist you in measuring your scholarship's impact and reach. Using our Web of Science subscription, we can find which research is citing your scholarship. Additionally, we can help you find bibliometrics like H-Index. More recent measurements have surfaced over the last decade, like Altmetrics, that measure where your research might be mentioned in news outlets, social media, and citation software like Mendeley. Presented by Joseph Riggie, head of information management, and Chris Hulsman, electronic and educational resources librarian.

Please register through the Workshop Registration System.

Biology-GLC Seminar: 'Genomic and Ecological Divergence in Wood Warblers' - Today

Posted:

Please join the Biology Department and the Great Lakes Center for the seminar "Genomic and Ecological Divergence in Wood Warblers," presented by Marcella Baiz, assistant professor of biological sciences at the University at Buffalo, today, March 11, at 3:00 p.m. in Science and Mathematics Complex 151. Attendees are welcome to enjoy coffee and cookies during the seminar.

Abstract
Dr. Baiz will share her research on genetic and ecological differentiation among North American wood warblers (family Parulidae). Wood warblers are a classic model of dietary niche partitioning, but unlike other model avian radiations, including Darwin's finches, dietary divergence among warblers is not closely tied to the history of species divergence. Dr. Baiz will talk about her research on patterns of molecular evolution of two plumage color genes: the Agouti signaling protein (ASIP), and Beta-carotene oxygenase 2 (BCO2), which suggest repeated recruitment of these two genes in driving plumage color differences. She will also talk about her work on the relationship between diet diversity and gut microbiome diversity, and the consequences of host divergence on gut microbiome assembly.

Coffee Talk: Anthology Ally (Previously Blackboard Ally) - March 7

Posted:

Are you thirsty for some inspiration, new knowledge, and making connections with colleagues? Instructional Design and Distance Learning and the Teaching and Learning Center will host the next Coffee Talk a series of weekly themed discussion and networking opportunities for the university on Thursday, March 7, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. in Butler Library 316.

Networking is the best thing you can do for your professional development! Share, learn, and grow from other professionals.

In this session, Meghan Pereira, director of IDDL, and Sumana Silverheels, interim director of student accessibility services, will demonstrate how to review Anthology Ally (previously Blackboard Ally) reports. Ally is a tool that helps faculty members improve the accessibility of course documents. With Ally, students view course documents in a variety of formats that support different learning needs. Ally is integrated into the Brightspace learning management system (LMS) and automatically provides alternative formats for certain course documents. Attendees are encouraged to bring their laptops if they wish to work on their documents and receive assistance during the sessions.

Please join us! Register through the Workshop Registration System. Walk-ins are always welcome.

Coffee Talk will be on hold for the remainder of March because of construction in the library but will resume April 11, when we will discuss the benefits of Microsoft Sharepoint. All Coffee Talk formats include a brief 15-minute presentation, a 30-minute discussion and technology help session, and 15 minutes to conclude, with topic resources and next steps to further the discussion.
