Tell Students: Big Brothers Big Sisters on Campus March 19

Big Brothers Big Sisters will be on campus Tuesday, March 19, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the Campbell Student Union lobby. Big Brothers Big Sisters believes that all children have the right to succeed and reach their full potential. As a Big Brother or Big Sister, you can help. For just a few hours a couple of times a month, you can make a friend and make a difference through one-to-one mentoring. Together, you can start something incredible. The program offers community-based mentoring where you bond with your Little Brother or Little Sister by catching a movie, taking walks, or merely hanging out and talking. As a Big Brother or Big Sister, you can help a child gain confidence, dream big, and achieve his or her potential.

The spring 2024 "Conversations in and out of the Disciplines" series kicks off tomorrow, March 15, as Jason Knight, associate professor in the Political Science, Public Administration, and Planning Department, presents "Racialized Economic Segregation: The Regulatory Framework of Urban Enclosure" at 3:00 p.m. in Ketchum Hall 320.

The talk will be followed by a brief Q&A and a short wine and cheese reception. Everyone is welcome.

Please note: Mary Beth Sullivan's presentation, "The English Classroom as a Contested Space: Preparing English Teachers During Divisive Times," originally scheduled for April 5, has been postponed until the fall semester.

The "Conversations" series was started 16 years ago by Ann Colley, SUNY Distinguished Professor Emerita of English, to "celebrate and draw attention to the research being done in various departments at Buffalo State University." Over this time, colleagues from Anthropology, Art Conservation, Art History, Biology, Chemistry, English, History, Mathematics, Philosophy, Political Science, and Secondary Education, among others, have shared their work with the Buffalo State and Buffalo communities.

Construction Impacts to Butler Library, Cleveland Hall Week of March 25

Posted:

The south entrance to Butler Library and the east entrance to Cleveland Hall will be temporarily offline for routine building access for two to four days beginning Monday, March 25, as part of the ongoing mechanical project at Butler Library. These doors will remain available as emergency exits.

Additionally, certain areas within Butler Library will be inaccessible during this time, specifically the Southwest Quad, StudyQuad on the first floor, Special Collections on the second floor, and CyberQuad on the third floor. These areas will be blocked off with caution tape to ensure safety.

During this time, a crane located between Butler Library and Cleveland Hall will be lifting equipment to the library roof. Construction personnel will be present to ensure safety, and caution tape and cones will be used to cordon off the area and prevent unauthorized access.

Tell Students: Gender and STEM Panel Discussion - March 12

The Women and Gender Studies Interdisciplinary Unit invites you to attend the panel discussion "Gender and STEM: Inspiring the Next Generation" on Tuesday, March 12, from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. in Bulger Communication Center 217. Please note the updated location.

This panel will feature Buffalo State faculty, staff, and students who will discuss the experiences, progress, and continuing challenges faced by cis and trans women and gender-nonconforming people in the STEM fields. Our distinguished guests include Saziye Bayram, associate professor of mathematics; Jiuan Jiuan Chen, associate professor of art conservation; Jen (Fox) Connelly, associate director of the planetarium; Kit Hastings, field and lab research technician with the Great Lakes Center; Amy McMillan, director of the Honors Program, and several Buffalo State STEM students.

We strongly encourage you to invite your students to attend this event. They will learn about the challenges and rewards that women, trans, and non-binary people experience in STEM and be inspired to explore new career pathways as we build a more inclusive STEM experience.

Drinks and refreshments will be served. Please register in advance so that we can get a head count of our guests.

AASCU's Practicing Democracy: Voter Education and Engagement on Campus Workshop Series

The American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) Practicing Democracy: Voter Education and Engagement on Campus workshop series continues Mondays and Fridays in March and April with sessions for faculty and staff members interested in preparing students and communities to participate in the upcoming elections. In March, the series explores ways to address political polarization and understanding voting as a social determinant of health among other themes. Register today for these workshops! 

Workshops are open to faculty and staff members at all higher education institutions who care about voter education and engagement.

In April, the workshop series continues with themes of building campus-community ties and integrating voter education in your classroom. Please spread the word.

Chartwells Dining: Ramadan Meals for Students

Ramadan begins today, March 11. Ramadan meals are available for students at the Bengal Kitchen to order on the Boost mobile ordering app. Suhoor meals will include two hard-boiled eggs and Halal entrĂ©e with a choice of apple juice or lemonade. These will be served chilled to be reheated in the morning. Iftar meals will include dates, Halal entrĂ©e, and a light side along with a choice of a fountain drink or coconut water. Orders must be placed by 2:00 p.m. daily.

Tell Students: Buffalo State Esports

Do you have students who are interested in joining a close-knit community of gaming enthusiasts? Do you know students who are interested in competing in online tournaments against other schools in various titles, or maybe interested in casting games or coaching teams? Whatever they are looking for, students can find it with Buffalo State esports. The program competes against other SUNY institutions and East Coast Division schools. In the past, Buffalo State esports has competed in Super Smash Bros Ultimate, Rocket League, Valorant, Call of Duty, and other popular sports titles like NBA2K and Madden. The program won championships in the past and multiple top eight finishes.

The program offers multiple teams for each skill level. In addition to competing against other institutions, Buffalo State esports hosts local tournaments. It is a great way to meet other students and make friends. Interested students can contact Buffalo State esports members on Bengal Connect, Twitch, Twitter, and Instagram. Buffalo State esports is sponsored by Student Leadership and Engagement.
