National Study of Learning, Voting, and Engagement (NSLVE) 2022 Report

Posted:

Buffalo State University has participated in the National Study of Learning, Voting, and Engagement (NSLVE) since 2014. The 2022 report is published, and the data has demonstrated that voting rates have continued to improve overall, with voter registration rates of 63.8 percent in 2014 to 70.1 percent in 2018, 75 percent in 2020, and 67.5 percent in 2022.

Voting rates of registered Buffalo State students have also continued to improve, from 20.3 percent in 2014 to 40.3 percent in 2018, 68.3 percent in 2020, and 35.7 percent in 2022. Despite these increases, Buffalo State still has a lower voting rate than peer institutions (24.1 percent voting rate of Buffalo State students compared with 30.6 percent of public masters institutions in 2022). As a result, summer voter registration efforts were held during New Student Orientation, and fall 2024 programming and activities are underway to encourage students to understand and engage in our democracy. Buffalo State is aiming to proudly maintain our ALL-IN Campus Democracy Challenge and Voter-Friendly Campus designations.

Review the SUNY Buffalo State NSVLE 2022 report in its entirety (PDF, 2 MB).

Review the SUNY Buffalo State Voter-Friendly Campus January 2023 Final Report (PDF, 167 KB).

Review the SUNY Buffalo State ALL-IN/Voter-Friendly 2024 Strategic Plan (PDF, 653 KB).

We are off to a great start with our Voter Friendly 2024 Strategic Plan, engaging 882 students with voter education information, registering 296 students, tentatively raising our voter registration rate to 34.5 percent. Students were also equipped with a voter plan and a registration tool guide to help them aid others to register. Find these resources, the fall 2024 voter engagement events program list, and more on the Bengals Vote CCE website.

Women at the Front Line of the Fight for Democracy - September 16

Posted:

Please join us for a dynamic and powerful talk,* "Women at the Front Line of the Fight for Democracy," on Monday, September 16, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. in Science and Mathematics Complex 173.

In 2011, the traditional role of women in Myanmar society began to change along with the process of transition of the political system. The process gave opportunities for women to expose themselves to new ideas on gender equality, feminism, and human rights as the world reengaged the country. In 2015, these opportunities rose with the taking over of the civilian government, led by Aung San Suu Kyi. But the expectations were short-lived as the country continues to descend into deeper turmoil, since February 1, 2021. Today, women are holding the front line of the country's quest for freedom, with nothing but their courage, commitment, and creativity. The battle for democracy in Myanmar has become a symbolic contest between democracy and authoritarianism at the heart of the Indo-Pacific region. "The international community must recognize the courage of the women of Myanmar and stand with them in their fight for democracy."

This talk is sponsored by the Buffalo State Global Studies Institute, School of Arts and Sciences, and School of the Professions.

*Important note: This talk is not for attribution. Participants and attendees may not attribute any quotes or share content of any speakers or participants. Use of personal recording devices and cameras is prohibited.
