Zhang Jie, professor of sociology and director of the Center for China Studies, published his article "Characteristics of Suicide Attempters from an Emergency Room in a Seven-Year Period," coauthored with Rui Zhou and Chao Song, in the Chinese Journal of Emergency Medicine 21 (1): 53–56. Zhou is now a Ph.D. student of public health in China.

Zhang Jie, professor of sociology and director of the Center for China Studies, published his article "Suicides in a Dream of Red Mansions: A Perspective of the Strain Theory of Suicide," coauthored with Shengming Yan and Lin Zhao, in the Journal of Shandong University (Philosophy and Social Sciences) 2012:139–147. Yan is now a professor of sociology at Peking University in China.

Bonita Durand, President's Office

Bonita Durand, chief of staff in the President’s Office and secretary to the Buffalo State College Council, will receive the Bernice Poss Award from the Western New York Regional Committee of the New York State Network for Women Leaders in Higher Education. The Poss Award is presented annually to women in higher education who exemplify noteworthy involvement in the advancement of female professionals, commitment to community services and programs for women, and support for colleagues and compassion in their daily conduct. The award will be given during the committee’s annual leadership conference on April 27.

Durand, who holds a Ph.D. in higher education administration from the University at Buffalo, also teaches in the Higher Education and Student Affairs Administration Department at Buffalo State. Her areas of interest include the history of American higher education, institutional advancement and development, strategic planning, and finance.

Zhang Jie, professor of sociology and director of the Center for China Studies, published his article "A Sociological Analysis of the Decline in the Suicide Rate in China" in Social Sciences in China, 5 (2011): 97–113. The paper's coauthors were Jun Jing, Xueya Wu, Weiwei Sun, and Cuntong Wang. Social Sciences in China is the leading journal in China in the social sciences.

Nancy Weekly, head of collections and the Charles Cary Rumsey curator of the Burchfield Penney Art Center, and adjunct lecturer in museum studies at Buffalo State College, presented “Painted Sounds: Charles E. Burchfield's Synesthetic Sensibilities” at the colloquium “Music, Image, and Silence: Studies in Comparative Literatures and the Arts” at Brock University in St. Catharine’s, Ontario, on March 2. Other presenters included May Peckham, a Ph.D. candidate in English at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri; David Griffin, an instructor at the Ontario College of Art and Design in Toronto, Ontario; Greta Berman, faculty member in the liberal arts program of the Juilliard School in New York City; and Robert Silverman, one of Canada’s premier pianists. The colloquium was organized by Leslie Boldt and Cristina Santos, in Brock University’s Department of Modern Languages, Literatures, and Cultures.
