Jeffrey Hirschberg, Television and Film Arts

Jeffrey Hirschberg's latest short film, Why Can't They All Be Like Johnny Depp? has been named an official selection at the Friars Club Comedy Film Festival and will screen in New York City on April 5.

Only 32 films were selected for the festival out of hundreds of submissions from all over the world. Hirschberg's short film was based on his feature-length screenplay of the same name, which was a winner in the Writer's Guild of America (WGA) Screenplay Reading Series in 2010.

Ted Schmidt, associate professor of economics and finance, presented his paper "The Political Economy of Food and Finance" at the 40th annual conference of the Eastern Economic Association, held in Boston, Massachusetts, March 6–9. Schmidt also chaired and served as a discussant for the session "Consequences of Finance."

Jack Karlis, assistant professor of communication, presented his research "Entertain Me Now, Later and When I Want: The Uses and Gratifications of College Students’ Consumption of Current Events on Social Media" in the Communication Technology (CTEC) Division/Open Competition at the 97th annual conference of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, held in Montreal, Canada, August 6–9.

Laura Roberts, clinical supervisor in the Speech-Language Pathology Department, had a continuing education e-course, Restorative Rehabilitation Dining Programs: Successful Development and Implementation, published by Northern Speech Services in March. Roberts is a board-certified specialist in swallowing and swallowing disorders.

Kristin Chambers, senior education specialist with the Center for Development of Human Services, published her first novel, In Accord (No Frills Buffalo, 2013). Set in Buffalo, the story centers on four long-time book club friends who are disappointed by the ending of their club’s latest selection. They each write a new personalized ending, a process that leads each character on a turbulent journey. The book is available from Amazon in paperback and Kindle editions.

Kianna Thomas, Residence Life Office

Kianna Thomas, resident director in the Residence Life Office, received the 2013–2014 "Umoja" Award for Graduate Students from NASPA – Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education (formerly the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators) and the African American Knowledge Community (AAKC). The award was presented during a special ceremony on March 18 at the Baltimore Inner Harbor Hilton in Baltimore, Maryland. Brian Dubenion, assistant director of residence life for student success, nominated Thomas for the award.

The Umoja Award is presented to an exemplary graduate student in student affairs and services. Recipients are recognized as rising young professionals who continuously seek to integrate their research and practice with the needs of the African and African American population. Honorees must demonstrate the principles of the award, Umoja: The importance of togetherness for the family and the community, which is reflected in the African saying "I Am We" or "I Am Because We Are."
