Sharon Raimondi, Exceptional Education

Sharon Raimondi, ’71, ’74, professor of exceptional education and director of the joint doctoral program in special education in conjunction with the University at Buffalo, has been appointed treasurer of the Council for Exceptional Children's board of directors. She began her term October 1. As treasurer, Raimondi serves as a voting member of the board and chair of the Finance and Audit Standing Committee.

A member of the council for 33 years, Raimondi is a former school board member for the Hopevale Union Free School District and past president and treasurer of the New York State CEC. She has held numerous other volunteer leadership positions within CEC and is a recipient of the New York State CEC Leadership Award.

Jean Gounard, director of international student affairs and vice president for advocacy of the Western New York and Northwestern Pennsylvania Chapter of the Fulbright Association, spoke on the latest developments of the Fulbright programs during a chapter conference, "Crossing Borders, Expanding Knowledge," held at Trocaire College in Buffalo on October 24.

Exalted Nature: The Real and Fantastic World of Charles E. Burchfield, a traveling exhibition, was reviewed in the Wall Street Journal on October 8. The exhibition was co-curated by Nancy Weekly, head of collections and Charles Cary Rumsey curator at the Burchfield Penney Art Center and lecturer in Buffalo State's museum studies program.

Kimberly Blessing, Philosophy

On September 22, 2014, Kimberly Blessing, professor of philosophy, presented her review of Pulitzer-Prize winning journalist Lawrence Wright’s book, Going Clear: Scientology, Hollywood and the Prison of Belief (Random House, 2013). More than 90 people attended the event, which was held at Chef's Restaurant in Buffalo.

Blessing was invited to review this book by Bistro Bookers, the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library's book review and discussion group.

M. Scott Goodman, associate professor and chair of the Chemstry Department, published his article "Iron Complexes of Tris(pyrazolyl)ethane Ligands Methylated in the 3-, 4-, and 5-Positions" in Inorganica Chimica Acta 423 Part A (2014): 358–368. The article was coauthored with Alexander Nazarenko, associate professor of chemistry, Michael De Marco, professor of physics, and Steven Tarasek, graduate student at the University at Buffalo. Tarasek is a 2014 alumnus of Buffalo State (physics).

Daniel Cunningham, Mathematics

A paper by Daniel Cunningham, professor of mathematics, "Strong Partition Cardinals and Determinacy in K(R)," has been accepted for publication in the Archive for Mathematical Logic. This refereed journal publishes research papers in set theory and mathematical logic. Cunningham's paper establishes that the axiom of determinacy is equivalent, in the inner model K(R), to the existence of strong partition cardinals.

Bruce G. Bryski, Communication

Bruce Bryski, associate professor of communication, has published "Intergenerational Communication for the Non-Traditional-Age Student," his third publication examining the role of communication between different generations in the workplace and college classroom. The publication was produced with a CDHS minigrant and is the sixth publication in a series examining effective communication.

Bryski also recently appeared with Kevin Hardwick, Erie County legislator and professor of political science at Canisius College, on WBEN-AM 930 radio discussing the potential candidates for the 2016 presidential election.

Andrew Garrity, programmer/analyst, and Neil Palmer, network support programmer, in Computing and Technology Services placed first (19:54) and second (22:53) respectively in their age group in the Buffalo State Alumni Association Bengal 5K Scholarship Run on Sunday September 21. The race supports two scholarship for Buffalo State students: the Legacy Scholarship Fund, awarded to a student who is the child or grandchild of a Buffalo State graduate, and the Military Service Scholarship, presented to a student who is currently serving or has prior service in any branch of the United States military.
