President's Blog - Addressing Affordability in Course Materials: The Buffalo State Way

Posted:

It has been disheartening to see the escalation in the cost of textbooks and classroom materials over the years. It seems that every year books become more expensive. Here at Buffalo State, we have been aware of this situation for some time...

Executive Order on Immigration

Posted:

As you probably know by now, President Trump by executive order has suspended the entry of citizens from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen into the United States. While Buffalo State College has no students, faculty, or staff members stranded by this order, 320 students across the State University of New York system are affected by the travel ban.

We affirm our commitment to diversity and equity and our unyielding stance against discrimination of all kinds, including discrimination based on religion or national origin.

We will continue to monitor the situation and support members of our community who may be affected by this order.

Please read this statement from SUNY Chancellor Zimpher and Chairman McCall regarding this matter.

Midterm Grades for All Students

Posted:

The spring 2017 Banner midterm grading window will be open from 9:00 a.m. Monday, March 13, to 9:00 p.m. Friday, March 24. Please note that the Academic Standards Office will no longer send out paper rosters to encourage midterm grading; rather, I am encouraging faculty members to enter midterm grades for all students this semester. In addition to entering an estimated midterm grade, faculty members can mark how regularly a student has attended a course by entering 0 (never attended), 1 (sporadic, unsatisfactory attendance), or 2 (consistent, satisfactory attendance) in the “Hours Attended” field. Students will be able to view their grades in Degree Works as the grades are entered, and advisers can use either Degree Works or copies of midterm grading reports that are available through their deans’ offices.

Thank you to all faculty members who entered midterm grades in Banner for the fall 2016 semester. Just under 30,000 midterm grades were submitted for almost 8,800 students! Banner midterm grades allow advisers, department chairs, and associate deans to academically guide students before the pass/fail and course withdrawal deadline, if needed. Your early, regular, and ongoing feedback to the students in your courses—through Blackboard, in-class conferences, Banner midterm grades, and other ways—allows students to have a realistic picture of their standing in your courses that helps motivate them to act in ways that will improve their academic standing.

Civic Action Plan: Responses Due February 24

Posted:

In September 2016, I charged the Buffalo State Civic Action Plan Work Group with developing a Civic Action Plan for Buffalo State in alignment with our campus mission and strategic plan. The purpose of the Civic Action Plan is to forward Buffalo State’s role as an urban-engaged campus in the city of Buffalo and expand our civic and community engagement efforts in ways that advance citizenship and positive social change.

After receiving comments from the campus and community in December, the Civic Action Plan Work Group has developed a second draft of the five-year civic action plan. Please take the time to read the draft and provide comments before February 24. The plan will also be discussed at the March College Senate meeting before the final plan is submitted in mid-March.
