Philanthropy at Work

Thanks to donor Eleanor Murray, the Buffalo State Archives and Special Collections Office has a new addition that documents the history of Buffalo’s storied Studio Arena Theatre.

Mrs. Murray recently established an endowed fund to ensure that the history of Studio Arena is preserved for future generations by the experts who oversee the archives in Butler Library.

In its heyday, Studio Arena was considered one of the top regional theaters and saw such stars as Glenn Close, John Goodman, Kathy Bates, Kelsey Grammer, Christopher Walken, and Christine Baranski grace its stage. Because of financial difficulties, Studio Arena closed in 2011 but then reopened as 710 Main Theatre. It’s now owned by Shea’s Performing Arts Center.

On June 9, we held a ceremony in the library to formally dedicate the archives in Eleanor Murray’s name. Approximately 30 guests attended, and we had the opportunity to personally thank her for this generous gift.

Mrs. Murray came to Buffalo in 1945 with her husband, the late Gerard Murray, a chemical engineer who worked for DuPont and manufactured the Ocelo brand. While raising their four children, Mrs. Murray, who had a lifelong love of theater, volunteered with many organizations, including the Studio Arena.

Her gift will provide for the ongoing maintenance of the archival collection, which will be permanently held for research in the library’s Special Collections. It also will enable the library to hire a graduate student to develop and maintain a searchable online database of the collection and develop rotating physical and digital exhibits.

We are grateful that Mrs. Murray has allowed the college to house this regional treasure.

Appointment: Registrar

Posted:

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Nigel Marriner, Ph.D., as Buffalo State College’s new registrar. Marriner comes to Buffalo State with 21 years of experience working in higher education. Most recently, he served as associate registrar at the University at Buffalo for five years. Marriner has had experience with the academy, the SUNY system, and collective bargaining units, and he is a proven leader of administrative staff. He has a clear understanding of the needs of institutions to make best use of developing technologies, and he understands how technology relates to the changing expectations of the Registrar’s Office.

During his visits to campus, Marriner demonstrated his understanding of the complex issues that face higher education, his ability to identify solutions to problems, and his knowledge of ways to streamline processes that benefit both students and the institution.

Marriner holds a bachelor of arts in history and drama from the University of Guelph; a master of science in college student personnel services from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio; and a doctor of philosophy in higher education administration from the University at Buffalo.

Please join me in welcoming Dr. Marriner, who will assume his duties Monday, June 20.

I want to thank Heather Maldonado and Deborah Silverman, search committee chairs, as well as the entire committee for their good work in recommending this appointment.

Academic Calendar Clarification

Posted:

As we transition into a new academic calendar that complies with the policies adopted last spring, we will have a transition year that slightly varies from the policy so that we do not have to move previously announced major events such as Commencement. The fall 2016 academic calendar on our web page contains the correct information. The fall 2016 semester begins Monday, August 29, and we will not have classes on Monday, October 10, or Friday, November 11. Study Day is eliminated, and classes should be scheduled through Friday, December 9. The spring 2017 semester begins Monday, January 23, so that we may hold Commencement on May 13. There will be no Study Day in the spring semester, and classes should be scheduled accordingly. I will convene a Calendar Committee this fall to set a five-year academic calendar moving forward.
