Invitation: What the Carnegie Classification Means to Buffalo State - September 22

Posted:

I cordially invite you to explore what the Carnegie Classification means to Buffalo State with Andrew Seligsohn, executive director of the Campus Compact, on Tuesday, September 22, from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. in the Burchfield Penney Art Center's Peter and Elizabeth C. Tower Auditorium

A reception will immediately follow the presentation. The favor of a reply is requested: RSVP.

Andrew Seligsohn became the fifth president of Campus Compact in June 2014, bringing to the organization his extensive experience in bringing higher education and communities together to solve problems and improve lives within a wide range of roles, from faculty members at small liberal arts colleges to executive-level administrators at large public and private universities.

Immediately before his appointment to Campus Compact, Seligsohn served as associate chancellor for civic engagement and strategic planning at Rutgers University–Camden, where he worked across the campus to develop a framework for enhancing the impact of the school’s civic engagement efforts in a focused manner, and oversaw the comprehensive leveraging of resources to positively influence and integrate students and faculty with the community. His leadership at Rutgers–Camden was also integral in advancing college access and success for underrepresented students by creating a home in the Office of Civic Engagement for the Hill Family Center for College Access and the Rutgers Future Scholars. Both programs provide support for first-generation students as they prepare for, apply to, and embark on postsecondary educational opportunities.

Prior to Rutgers–Camden, Seligsohn was the director of civic engagement learning at Princeton University. He also served as a faculty member in the Department of Political Science at Hartwick College from 2001 to 2007, where he earned tenure and promotion to the rank of associate professor. Seligsohn holds a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota and a B.A. from Williams College. He also serves on the boards of directors for several community organizations in the Trenton and Camden, New Jersey, areas.

Merger of Career and Technical Education, Technology Education Programs

Posted:

James Mayrose, dean of the School of the Professions, and Wendy Paterson, dean of the School of Education, are pleased to announce the merger of the career and technical education program and the technology education program. Today’s cutting-edge, rigorous career and technical education (CTE) programs prepare students for a wide range of high-wage, high-skill, high-demand careers, a mission shared with technology education. Technology education is an integral program of study within the New York State mathematics, science, and technology learning standards and is often found under the umbrella of CTE programs. Technology education students learn to use concepts of science and mathematics in a hands-on, systems-based approach to problem solving. These concepts guide students in the understanding, design, and development of systems, devices, and products to serve human needs and wants. Merging these programs at Buffalo State will enable our faculty to provide more relevant career information to their respective students.

Title IX Fall 2015

Posted:

A Title IX memorandum was e-mailed to all students and leadership of Buffalo State College on Tuesday, September 8, 2015. This annual notice to the Buffalo State community provides valuable information about Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 that prohibits sex discrimination in education.

It reads: “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance.” Title IX extends protections against discrimination to educational institutions for students, faculty, and staff.

Please download the Title IX poster (PDF) that is familiar across campus, the residential halls, and on our website. It will also be in the next edition of the Record. We urge you to familiarize yourself with this protective tool, readily available on the campus of Buffalo State.

If you have any questions, please contact the Equity and Campus Diversity Office: 878-6210, Cleveland Hall 415, or eeoequity@buffalostate.edu.

Faculty Textbook Survey: Please Participate

Celebrating Diversity: AFP 2015

Posted:

The Equity and Campus Diversity Office invites you to support and participate in the 2015 Anne Frank Project on Wednesday, September 16, and Thursday, September 17. This social justice festival is just one of many opportunities to witness Buffalo State demonstrate our commitment to diversity with the AFP 2015 theme, “Identity, Inclusion, and the World.” Opportunities for volunteering are also available.

Two full days of workshops, theater, and art that examine and celebrate community, human rights, and identity across the disciplines also confirm Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s statement: “The hope of a secure and livable world lies with disciplined nonconformists who are dedicated to justice, peace, and brotherhood.”

Witness the scholars, artists, and community activists who facilitate the hands-on workshops, exhibits, and performances that activate unification and peace processes, and eliminate the role of the bystander. Download the AFP 2015 app or visit the AFP website for the full schedule of events (PDF).
