Response to Senate Recommendation: Adoption of Policy on 4+1 Undergraduates Enrolling in Graduate Courses

Posted:

At its May 8, 2015, meeting, the College Senate voted to recommend to the president adoption of the following policy regarding 4+1 undergraduates enrolling in graduate courses:

4+1 Undergraduates Enrolling in Graduate Courses Policy
WHEREAS, Buffalo State may attract more high-achieving undergraduate students by offering 4+1 programs that will allow undergraduates to apply for conditional admission to graduate school and complete 9 hours of graduate coursework during their senior year; and

WHEREAS, Buffalo State may increase graduate enrollment through 4+1 program pathways; and

WHEREAS, the Graduate School is available to facilitate the development of 4+1 program pathways for departments, but departments would maintain control of participating in 4+1 programs, development of 4+1 curricular pathways, and admissions standards required for these programs,

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that Buffalo State adopt the following 4+1 Undergraduates Enrolling in Graduate Courses policy:

4+1 Undergraduates Enrolling in Graduate Courses
Students who have been accepted into one of Buffalo State’s 4+1 programs, combining undergraduate and graduate study, may register for graduate-level courses during their senior year based on department requirements and guidance. A maximum of 9 credit hours (divided between the first and second semester of a student’s senior year) may be taken during the senior year, and students must maintain academic eligibility, as outlined by the admission requirements into the program, throughout their senior year. The combined enrollment of undergraduate and graduate courses should not exceed departmental guidelines.

The graduate courses taken in this manner are related to a graduate program of study and will not apply toward an undergraduate degree. The six-year time limitation on the completion of the master’s degree program applies to these as well as other credits.

I hereby accept the recommendation of the College Senate on 4+1 undergraduate students enrolling in graduate courses. I charge the provost with the responsibility of overseeing the implementation of this policy effective with the fall 2015 semester.

Posted:

At its May 8, 2015, meeting, the College Senate voted to recommend to the president that the language in the opening paragraph of the DOPS Academic Misconduct Policy be revised from “all students at the college” to “all Buffalo State students.” The portion of the policy affected by this recommendation is indicated in boldface capital letters below:

Buffalo State College
Directory of Policy Statements
Policy Number: VIII: 04:00
Updated: February 9, 2006
Subject: Academic Misconduct

Policy approved by president on February 9, 2006, in college Bulletin; addition approved on April 12, 2007, in college Bulletin.

ALL BUFFALO STATE STUDENTS are expected to display honesty and integrity in completing course requirements and following college academic regulations.

“Academic misconduct” refers to any form of plagiarism or cheating on examinations or assignments, and is inconsistent with the aims and goals of the State University College at Buffalo. Instances of academic misconduct include but are not limited to:

  • Prior acquisition or possession of an examination and submission of false data
  • Submission of the work of another individual without proper acknowledgment
  • Performance of work in a course for another individual while registered in the same course

I hereby accept the recommendation of the College Senate on the revision of language in the opening paragraph of the DOPS Academic Misconduct Policy. I authorize the language revision to read “all Buffalo State College students,” effective immediately, and I charge the provost with the responsibility of overseeing the revision of the language in the policy and communicating the change to all appropriate departments.

Response to Senate Recommendation: Revision of DOPS Freshman Admission Policy

Posted:

At its May 8, 2015, meeting, the College Senate voted to recommend to the president the following revisions to the DOPS Freshman Admission Policy.

Freshman Admission Policy Revision
WHEREAS, the only current recorded freshman admission policy on record is from 1992; and

WHEREAS, the 1992 policy calls for review every five years and this has not occurred; and

WHEREAS, an ad hoc workgroup of Standards for Students members and Enrollment Management staff has met to review institutional and peer practices, SUNY regulations, and national best practices; and

WHEREAS, Buffalo State’s Directory of Policy Statements (DOPS) lacks a policy statement for freshman admission,

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that Buffalo State adopt the following revised Freshman Admission policy and post it in the Directory of Policy Statements (DOPS).

BUFFALO STATE COLLEGE
DIRECTORY OF POLICY STATEMENTS
Policy Number: I: 01:__ Date: April 2015
Subject: Freshman Admission

Admission is based on academic performance in high school and on space availability. Successful applicants will be those who submit a completed application (i.e., application form, standardized test scores, essay, and high school transcript) with a demonstrated competitive high school curriculum. Students who apply without demonstrated success in a competitive curriculum may be reviewed using “holistic review,” which includes a variety of factors (e.g., standardized test scores, letters of recommendation, strength of high school program completed, and extracurricular participation).

Special consideration for admission is available to applicants with extenuating circumstances that may have affected their past academic record. Students admitted under the special consideration provision may have stipulations attached to their admission (e.g., specific course enrollment, academic skill development, mentoring). The percentage of special consideration admissions will be reviewed annually in a meeting of the Standards for Students Committee and the associate vice president for enrollment management.

Previously earned college credit (e.g., Advanced Placement, college coursework completed while in high school) will be evaluated after students’ acceptance upon receipt of their official scores and/or college-credit bearing transcripts. Accepted students will be apprised regarding transferable credit. Grades, quality points, and cumulative averages do not transfer. Departments reserve the right to refuse to accept transfer credit hours in fulfillment of their own major requirements, within the parameters set forth by SUNY Seamless Transfer requirements.

I hereby accept the recommendation of the College Senate on revisions to the DOPS Policy on Freshman Admission. I charge the provost with the responsibility of overseeing the implementation of the revisions to this policy effective with the fall 2015 semester.
