Buffalo State Fitness Center Closed for Construction

The Buffalo State Fitness Center will be closed from 3:00 p.m. Friday, March 22, through Sunday, March 31. The center will reopen for regular business hours at 6:00 a.m. Monday, April 1. Flex Spending Account 2012 Claims Deadline Approaching

Employees enrolled in the Flex Spending Account (FSA) for the 2012 plan year have until Sunday, March 31, to submit reimbursement requests for eligible 2012 expenses incurred under the Health Care Spending Account and the Dependent Care Advantage Account. Under the IRS “use it or lose it” rule, if you fail to submit requests for reimbursement for all eligible 2012 expenses by the March 31 deadline, you will forfeit the remaining funds in your 2012 account.

FSA reimbursement requests may be mailed, faxed, or submitted online through www.myfbmc.com. For more information, visit www.flexspend.ny.gov or call the FSA hotline at (800) 358-7202.

All 2012 claims must be submitted by March 31. There are no exceptions to this deadline.

Professional Development: Developing Disciplinary Habits of Mind - General Education Faculty Interest Group Discussion

Our Faculty Interest Group discussion on Friday, April 5, will focus on supporting students in developing disciplinary habits of mind within our general education courses. We might think of habits of mind as the skills or modes of thinking necessary to be an anthropologist, chemist, designer, historian, philosopher, or mathematician. Please come prepared to discuss at least five habits of mind found in your discipline as well as some of the ways these skills are incorporated into your general education courses. Concrete illustrations are often helpful.

Bagels and coffee will be available at 8:15 a.m., and the discussion will take place from 8:30 to 10:00 a.m. in the Professional Development Center, E. H. Butler Library 181B.

Learn to employ the principles used in video games to your teaching. Get game-based learning strategies and best practices that will motivate and engage your students without technical distractions. Participants will watch examples of gamification methods in action while focusing on the philosophy behind game-based learning. In the process, you will learn how to

  • identify the five principles of gamification;
  • develop strategies to translate these concepts into action in a face-to-face class, a learning management system (LMS), or an online class;
  • adjust curricular designs to take full advantage of gamification elements;
  • wrap the gamification elements around a central location such as an LMS;
  • locate resources to assist you.

Buffalo State Dining's Balanced U program is a holistic approach to food and nutrition. It's based on one concept—we eat food. To help students, faculty, and staff understand how food plays into health, Balanced U consists of monthly subjects that act as an educational opportunity to focus on food topics of interest to our customers. March's monthly subject is Metabolism Boosters.

The Grapefruit Diet, the Zone Diet, the Green Tea Diet—lots of research has been done in search of that one food or combination of foods that sends your metabolism soaring and melts away the pounds.
