CIS Department Wins Google Grant to Host CS4HS Workshop

A Google grant has been awarded to faculty members Sarbani Banerjee (project director), Neal Mazur, Ramona Santa Maria, and Barbara Sherman of the Computer Information Systems Department to host a three-day CS4HS (Computer Science for High School) workshop June 26–28 for in-service teachers from area high schools. With the goal of broadening participation in computing, the high school teachers will learn various concepts of computer science and different strategies for attracting students to computing. If you know of any in-service high school mathematics, science, or technology teachers who might be interested in attending, please encourage them to check out the CS4HS website and register for the workshop.

Please be advised that the campus Mail Room will be moving from the Clinton Center to Moore Hall (building 28 on the campus map—not to be confused with Moore Complex, the residence hall) on Wednesday, June 5. Governor Cuomo Directs Flags to Half-Staff

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo has directed that flags on state government buildings be flown at half-staff on Wednesday, June 5, in honor of a Fort Drum soldier who died in Sharan, Afghanistan, on June 1.

Private 1st Class Mariano M. Raymundo died in an incident that is under investigation. He was a member of the 210th Brigade Support Battalion, part of the 2nd Brigade Combat Team of the 10th Mountain Division. PFC Raymundo was from Houston, Texas.

"On behalf of all New Yorkers, I extend my condolences to the family, friends, and fellow soldiers of PFC Raymundo," Governor Cuomo said. "We will honor the service of this Fort Drum soldier, and we are grateful for this commitment to our country."

Governor Cuomo has directed that the flags on all state buildings be lowered to half-staff in honor of and in tribute to our state's service members and those stationed in New York who are killed in action or die in a combat zone.

Notice to CSEA Local 640 Members

A ballot box election of officers for the positions of president and treasurer will be held on Friday, June 14, from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. in Caudell Hall 116. Please bring a valid form of ID with you to the polling location, such as your CSEA ID card, SUNY ID card, driver’s license, or pay stub. Also, please have your CSEA ID number with you at the time of voting.

If you are unable to vote in person, an absentee ballot may be obtained by contacting Perry Edinger. The deadline for receipt of completed absentee ballots is 5:00 p.m., Friday, June 14, at CSEA Local 640 Election Committee, P.O. Box 295, Buffalo, NY 14213.

To be eligible to vote, a member must be in good standing as of April 1, 2013.

Buffalo State Day at Old Fort Niagara

Join us to celebrate Buffalo State Day on Wednesday, June 19, at Old Fort Niagara in Youngstown, New York, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Observe the students in the 2013 Buffalo State Archaeological Field School as they excavate a portion of a War of 1812 soldiers’ barracks. Tour the French Castle, enjoy the grounds, and see the Visitor Center. Historical demonstrations run from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Buffalo State students, faculty, staff, and their families can visit free of charge with a valid Buffalo State ID card.
