Paul G. Bulger Lecture: 'Teaching and the Future of Education'

José Antonio Bowen, dean of the Meadows School of the Arts, will deliver the 2013 Paul G. Bulger Lecture on Wednesday, October 30, at 4:00 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center at Rockwell Hall. His talk is titled “Teaching and the Future of Education.”

Bowen has been a pioneer in active learning and the use of technology in teaching, including podcasts and online games, and has been featured in the Wall Street Journal, Newsweek, USA Today, and US News and World Report and on NPR for his book Teaching Naked: How Moving Technology Out of Your College Classroom Will Improve Student Learning (2012). In the book, Bowen introduces new ways to think about learning and technology. A strong advocate for the unique and pivotal role of teacher-student interaction in the education process, Bowen also discusses and presents a multitude of ways to use technology to enhance the vitality and quality of that interaction. He has been the keynote speaker at numerous national conferences, including the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U), exploring topics related to teaching, teaching and technology, and the pivotal role of faculty and teachers in the learning process.

The Dr. Paul G. Bulger Lectureship was established by the Buffalo State Foundation on February 9, 1967, to honor President Paul Bulger for his years of dedicated service and leadership to Buffalo State, the Niagara Frontier community, and the State of New York. Tell Students: First Marketing Club Meeting

The first meeting of the student marketing club will take place Thursday, August 29, at 12:15 p.m. in Chase Hall 342. There will be pizza. The marketing club is open to all students at Buffalo State regardless of major. We have several exciting activities planned for this semester. We will also need to fill some officer positions. Please attend the meeting and bring a friend.

Deadline for UUP-Represented Employees to Enroll in the 2013 Opt-Out Program Is Friday, August 30

The Opt-Out Program is now available to UUP-represented employees. This program allows eligible employees who have other employer-sponsored group health insurance to opt out of their NYSHIP coverage in exchange for an incentive payment. The incentive payment is $1,000 for opting out of individual coverage or $3,000 for opting out of family coverage on an annual basis.

UUP employees who are currently enrolled in NYSHIP and wish to participate in the Opt-Out Program for the remainder of 2013 must return the completed Health Insurance Transaction Form and the 2013 Opt-Out Attestation Form to Cleveland Hall 410 by Friday, August 30.

2013 Productivity Enhancement Program (PEP) Enrollment Period for UUP-Represented Employees Ends Friday, August 30

The 2013 Productivity Enhancement Program (PEP) is now available to UUP-represented employees. The program allows eligible employees to forfeit previously accrued annual leave (vacation) in exchange for a credit to be applied toward the employee share of their NYSHIP premium on a biweekly basis.

To enroll in the Productivity Enhancement Program (PEP) for the remainder of 2013, UUP-represented employees must apply by Friday, August 30. Information, including the 2013 PEP enrollment form, was issued to all eligible employees from the Employee Benefits Office. The complete UUP PEP description is available on the Human Resource Management website.

West Side Youth Development Coalition at Buffalo State: Neighborhood Organizing 101 Event Planned

The West Side Youth Development Coalition at Buffalo State, in collaboration with the Grant-Amherst Business Association and the Buffalo Police Department D-District, will hold an informational seminar about forming and retaining interest in neighborhood organizations on Tuesday, September 3, from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. at the Polish Cadets Hall (corner of Amherst and Grant streets).

The program, which is free and open to the public, will have several experts available to provide information on such topics as

  • how to organize or reenergize your neighborhood group;
  • the importance of crime-prevention education;
  • the relationship between stable neighborhoods, quality of life, homeownership, and successful block and community groups.

Residents, Buffalo State students, landlords, tenants, businesses, and block club members are all encouraged to attend. The program is also sponsored by Black Rock-Riverside Neighborhood Housing Services, the Buffalo and Erie County Board of Block Clubs, and the Crime Prevention Association of WNY. Refreshments will be served.

Aloha! The Career Development Center's Part-Time-Job Luau is today, August 29, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Student Union Quad (rain location: Student Union Social Hall).

More than 30 campus departments and local businesses and organizations will be in attendance, looking to hire Buffalo State students to fill their part-time-job openings.

Please advise seniors who are graduating in December 2013 that the deadline to submit applications for December graduation is Friday, September 13. Students may download the form at www.buffalostate.edu/registrar/documents/degap.pdf or complete the form at the Registrar's Office in Moot Hall. The minimum number of credits for an undergraduate degree is 120; some majors require more. Students should contact their advisers with questions.

Buffalo State to Host Community Meet and Greet August 31

Attention, students, faculty, staff, and community members who live in the neighborhood near Buffalo State (Elmwood, Forest, Grant, and Potomac boundaries): Buffalo State will host the first Community Meet and Greet event on Saturday, August 31, from noon to 4:00 p.m. in the Buffalo History Museum's Resource Center, located at 459 Forest Avenue. RSVP is required. You may fill out the online RSVP form.

The event will provide food, fun, information, and entertainment for all ages, including families with small children. Our goal is to allow students and residents the opportunity to get to know one another in a safe and positive environment.

The Community Meet and Greet provides an opportunity to better connect our campus and students with the City of Buffalo, its residents, and fellow neighbors. If you have any questions, please contact Paula Madrigal, coordinator of health education programs, ext. 4719. If you or someone you know lives in this community, please consider joining us and sharing this information about this amazing new event!

Students who live in this neighborhood and RSVP before August 30 will receive a free Welcome Kit, which includes a variety of items and information useful to first-time renters. Kits are limited and are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
