Professional Development: Making Course Content Accessible - Audio and Video

Buffalo State is engaging in an effort to promote accessibility of course materials in classes, including face-to-face, online, and hybrid. Learn about best practices for creating and providing transcripts or closed captions for audio and video that are used within your courses. Our campus procedures, resources, and expectations will be shared on Monday, October 28, from noon to 1:00 p.m. in Bulger Communication Center 104. This workshop will be repeated on Wednesday, November 13, from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m.

Professional Development: Introduction to the R Statistical Program

R is a powerful open-source statistical program that requires no license or fee. The use of R in scientific research has undergone exponential growth during the last decade, and in many fields it is the default statistical package. This workshop provides a beginning introduction to R that is focused on getting started, loading data, and simple statistical analysis. Blackboard Collaborate is a live web-conferencing application that allows exciting and new approaches to support a twenty-first-century teaching and learning environment. Join us and learn how easily Collaborate allows you to import PowerPoint slides and share your computer screen or a particular window with participants while interacting with students through chat, webcam, and microphone. All adoptions can be placed on the new Barnes & Noble online adoption platform, FacultyEnlight (visit www.buffalostate.bncollege.com, click on "Textbooks," and then click on "Faculty Resources"). Here you may log in or create a new account if this site is new to you. If you prefer, adoptions may also be placed via e-mail or in person with Amy Young, the textbook manager.

SUNY B-140W Employee Tuition Assistance Deadline

The deadline to submit applications for the SUNY B-140W Tuition Assistance Program for the fall 2013 semester is Wednesday, October 2.

Staff members may apply for tuition assistance after six months of service; faculty members may apply after one semester of service. The following employees are eligible:

  • Full-time Buffalo State faculty and professional or classified employees.
  • Part-time or temporary Buffalo State faculty and professional or classified employees who are employed at least half time (faculty must teach at least two courses in the semester).
  • Full-time Research Foundation employees provided they work on the Buffalo State campus.

Program funds may be used for courses at SUNY campuses only. Eligible employees may apply for a 50 percent waiver of SUNY tuition for up to two courses per semester, to a maximum of 15 credit hours per academic year. Tuition assistance is limited to regular in-state undergraduate or graduate tuition rates. The level of support may be adjusted when necessary if funding is not adequate to cover applications received. Contact Human Resource Management, ext. 4821, for program applications and guidelines.

Buffalo State to Host NASPA Region II Conference

Buffalo State will join Towson University, the Fashion Institute of Technology, and Chatham University as host sites for the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators Region II Careers in Student Affairs Conference on Friday, October 4. The conference allows undergraduate students, graduate students, and new professionals to explore student affairs as a career. The conference will be held in E. H. Butler Library 210. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. Please contact Julie Dorsheimer, ext. 3506, for additional information.

Adrienne Costello to Speak at Brown Bag Lecture Series

Adrienne Costello, associate professor of English, will open the 2013–2014 Secondary Education Brown Bag Lecture Series with her presentation "Talk Matters: Claiming Professional Voice While Honoring Student Voices in Secondary Education" on Thursday, October 17, from 12:15 to 1:25 p.m. in Ketchum Hall 313.

The Brown Bag Lecture Series is an ongoing speaker series sponsored by the English Education Student Association at Buffalo State that seeks to engage secondary education faculty and students across campus in dialogue about teaching and learning in grades 7–12. The series features informal talks by faculty and other members of the Buffalo State secondary education community, including local principals, teachers, and alumni. The series is free and open to the public.
