Approaches to Assessing Service Learning

Capturing the effectiveness of service-learning initiatives on campus can be a complicated and challenging task. The Western New York Service-Learning Coalition will host this session on Wednesday, April 4, from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. in Cleveland Hall 418 to explore examples of effective assessment tools and systems you can use to improve your assessment strategies. It will be presented by Kim Yousey-Elsener of Campus Labs.

Submissions Due Today: Women and Gender Studies Research Symposium

As part of Women's History Month, the women and gender studies program at Buffalo State will hold a daylong research symposium to showcase faculty, student, and staff scholarship and research related to women, gender, and sexuality. The symposium will take place on Friday, March 30, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the Burchfield Penney Art Center auditorium. Refreshments will be provided.

We encourage submissions from all departments, programs, and disciplines; diversity will be a key criterion in compiling the program. Presenters may deliver scholarly papers, hold roundtable or panel discussions, show multimedia presentations, or present posters. To be considered for the symposium, please submit the following materials to Jennifer Ryan, associate professor of English and symposium coordinator, by 5:00 p.m. today: (1) a brief (200- to 500-word) abstract of your project and how it relates to women and gender studies; (2) a list of all collaborators on the project and any unavailable times on the day of the symposium; (3) a short curriculum vitae OR a brief bio.

'The Artists Among Us II': Burchfield Penney Members' Exhibition Call for Entries

In recognition of the artists of Western New York and our role as the center of record for the arts of this region, the Burchfield Penney Art Center is pleased to host the second members' exhibition in the museum’s history. This celebration of artistic expression in our community is important. It was fitting that the final exhibition in our Rockwell Hall galleries was our first members' exhibition, and now, more than three years after the new museum opened to the public, we are excited to host The Artists Among Us II.

Eligibility

  • Artists must be members of the Burchfield Penney Art Center in good standing as of May 3, 2012 (or the date that artwork is delivered to the Burchfield Penney.*
  • Presented work must have been created in the last two years.

*Buffalo State College students, alumni, faculty, and staff: please indicate your affiliation to Buffalo State.

Entry Guidelines

  • Submissions are limited to one work per artist.**
  • Maximum size is 30 x 40 inches (framed) for two-dimensional work and 36 inches in any direction for three-dimensional work.
  • Work must arrive at the Burchfield Penney “ready to hang,” i.e., framed with hanging wire or rings attached.
  • Time-based media will be included on a first-come, first-served basis. Work will be installed as appropriate and included with other media.
  • Performance, spoken word, music, and film are all welcome. Member artists will be provided with 20-minute time slots on select Thursdays throughout the exhibition. Interested artists should contact Don Metz, associate director.

**Members at the family/dual level or higher may submit a maximum of two works per family or couple.

Schedule

  • Work must be delivered to the Burchfield Penney from Monday, April 30, to Thursday, May 3, between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. each day (until 9:00 p.m. Thursday).
  • An opening reception will be held on Friday, May 11, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.
  • The exhibition will be on view from Friday, May 11, to Sunday, August 26.
  • Work cannot be removed before August 26. Work must be picked up from the Burchfield Penney Art Center from Monday, August 27, to Friday, August 31, between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. each day (9:00 p.m. Thursday).
  • The museum reserves the right to dispose of uncollected work as it sees fit.

Shipping
Artists must deliver work to the Burchfield Penney Art Center no later than Thursday, May 3, at 9:00 p.m. The museum will not store packing materials.

Insurance
Works will be insured by the Burchfield Penney from the time of delivery until the time of pickup. The museum assumes no responsibility for loss or damage while work is in transit.

Summer/Fall 2012 Registration Information: Banner Preview

Banner Preview began Monday, March 12, and continues. In Self-Service Banner, students can search the master schedule for both summer and fall semesters (in draft format), view holds (if applicable), view their assigned advisers, and view their assigned time tickets or registration time assignments (if available) for summer and fall 2012 registration. Please remember that all registration activity begins at 6:00 a.m. on the assigned date and is then continuous. All continuing students are encouraged to register on their assigned dates to secure their desired schedules.

The master schedule may continue to change. As a quick reference, you can view changes, including courses added or canceled, via the summer addendum Excel spreadsheet on the Registrar's Office website. The fall 2012 master schedule and the fall addendum will be available online starting March 21 at www.buffalostate.edu/registrar/fall2009.xml.

All students are encouraged to stay on track by registering on their assigned dates to secure their desired schedules.

Application Deadline Today: 14th Annual Student Research and Creativity Celebration

The deadline is midnight tonight for students to submit applications for the 14th annual Research and Creativity Celebration! Mentors have until midnight Friday, March 16, to review, edit, and approve the applications.

Everything is done online. Students start the process by going to the Undergraduate Research Office home page and using the quick link in the upper-right corner or by scanning the QR code on the event poster. The website includes useful tips for preparing abstracts and artists statements, as well as programs from prior years.

Note: This program is open to undergraduate and graduate students and students are encouraged to present work in progress. Individual and group presentations are accepted. Presentation formats include posters, talks, performances, and demonstrations. Please help your student(s) identify the mode that is best for them.
