Suspension of BSC 101 Requirement: Implementation

Posted:

On March 8, 2012, the president approved the suspension of the BSC 101 requirement effective with the fall 2012 semester.

As of March 28, 2012, suspension of the BSC 101 requirement has been implemented. The BSC 101 requirement has been waived for all students who (1) have not taken BSC 101 or (2) are not currently enrolled in BSC 101. The waiver has been applied to the audits of all appropriate students in Degree Navigator. New students entering for summer, fall, and future semesters will have the waiver automatically applied to their audit. Students are being notified.

FAQs:

  1. Will incoming students be required to take the course? No.
  2. Will current students who have not yet taken the course need to take it before they graduate? No. The suspension is effective for all current students who have not taken the course.
  3. What happens to a student who withdraws from, or fails BSC 101 during spring 2012? The student will receive a waiver of the BSC 101 requirement after grading is completed for spring 2012. The W or failing grade will remain as part of the student’s academic record.
  4. If a student received an E, will he or she have the option to retake the course? Yes, it is recommended that students in this situation retake it either this summer or in fall 2012.
  5. Will any sections of BSC 101 be offered during summer/fall 2012? A few sections of the course will be offered for current students who need to retake the course or wish to take the course as an elective. Departments that wish to use BSC 101 in their freshman registration block should contact Lisa Hunter, assistant dean for intellectual foundations, to make appropriate arrangements.
