Research and Creativity Council Incentive Program

Posted:

The Research and Creativity Council Incentive Program is accepting applications for incentive funds aimed at promoting faculty creativity and research until Thursday, November 15. The goal of the incentive funds, administered by the Research and Creativity Council, is to generate additional funded programs. One year after receiving an incentive award, recipients will be required to submit a full report documenting the use of these funds and to submit a grant proposal to an outside sponsoring agency. Recipients are also obligated to participate in the Faculty and Staff Fall Forum, which takes place in October.

Expenditures considered for support under this program include travel to consult with a funding source, secretarial assistance, student assistance, consultation with grant specialists, preparation of specialized support materials for proposal (e.g., graphs, drawings, resource books), release time, and any other expense that can be justified. Funds cannot be requested for the purchase of computers. Also, it is not the council’s intention to directly pay an individual for writing a proposal.

The RCC Incentive Program application is available on the Research Foundation's website. Please submit applications to the Research Foundation Pre-Award and Contract Services Office in Bishop Hall 24 by November 15. Three council members have been appointed to review all applications received by the above deadline date.

John Cage's 'Europera 5' at the Burchfield Penney on Friday, October 12, at 8:00 p.m.

Posted:

Join the Burchfield Penney Art Center at Buffalo State for a performance of John Cage's Europera 5 on Friday, October 12, at 8:00 p.m. in the Peter and Elizabeth C. Tower Auditorium, part of M&T Second Friday at the Burchfield Penney.

Europera 5 (1991) was John Cage's last and most portable opera. It is a collage scored for two singers, each singing five arias of their own choosing from the standard opera repertoire. A pianist "accompanies" them by playing six different opera transcriptions. They are joined by a single 78 rpm Victrola player, playing six historical opera recordings and a performer playing a prerecorded tape, plus the use of a radio and a silent television.

This performance features Martha Herr (soprano), Tom Kostusiak (lighting), Don Metz (Truckera tape), Amy Williams (piano), Jan Williams (78 rpm Victrola), and Robert Zimmerman (tenor).

Tickets are $5 for Burchfield Penney members, $15 for "not yet" members, and may be purchased online or by phone at ext. 6011 during gallery hours.

More information is available on the Burchfield Penney website.

Running with the Pack: Field Ecology and the Wolves of Yellowstone

Posted:
The Buffalo State Sustainability Council is pleased to host a forum on the gray wolves of Yellowstone with Joseph Allen, instructor for the University at Buffalo’s environmental studies program, and his students on Thursday, October 25, at 7:00 p.m. in the Ethel Lockman Newman Lecture Hall (Bulger Communication Center North). Allen led this group on a field excursion in Wyoming as part of the course Ecology of Unique Environments. While studying in Yellowstone National Park, they were witness to rarely seen gray wolf behavior, including a single alpha female taking down a full-grown elk mid-stream and the killing of a trespassing wolf by members of the residential pack. The students documented these behaviors digitally, kept journals during the trip, and are eager to discuss these unusual sightings, general wolf ecology, and how this experience has shaped their education. For further information, please e-mail bssc@buffalostate.edu.
