New York State Employee Health Benefits Fair

Representatives from Community Blue, Independent Health, and the Empire Plan will be on campus from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, December 6, in E. H. Butler Library 210 to answer questions about current health insurance plans and anticipated changes in coverage for 2013.

Staff members from the Employee Benefits Office will also be present to assist employees in making changes to health insurance coverage. Attendees may have their blood pressure checked; learn about the benefits of and sample massage therapy; learn how to maximize dental and vision care benefits from representatives of the UUP Benefit Trust Fund; get ideas on how to balance work, home, and life from NYS Balance; obtain information about the Employee Assistance Program and meet EAP coordinators; consult with Fitness Center staff on how to become stronger and healthier; and get ideas and support on how to quit smoking from the Weigel Health Center staff.

Employee Benefits 2013 Enrollment/Change Deadlines

Friday, November 30, is the 2013 enrollment/change deadline for the following:

2013 Flex Spending Account: Health Care Spending or Dependent Care Advantage Account. Enroll online at  www.flexspend.ny.gov or call (800) 358-7202.

Productivity Enhancement Program (PEP): Eligible CSEA, PEF, and M/C employees may forfeit vacation or personal leave in exchange for a credit to be applied toward health insurance premiums in 2013. Please visit www.buffalostate.edu/offices/hr/pep.asp for program details.

Changes in health coverage for 2013: Employees may voluntarily cancel their health insurance coverage, change from family to individual coverage, or change their pretax contribution status for insurance deductions. A Health Insurance Transaction form is required to make these changes.

Please note: Employees who are enrolled in NYSHIP will have 30 days from the date the 2013 rates are approved and published to change their health insurance carriers.

Celebration of Computer Science Education Week

Join us in celebrating Computer Science Education Week on Tuesday, December 4, during Bengal Pause (noon–1:30 p.m.) in the Bulger Communication Center main lobby. Encourage your students to stop by to play video games or interact with digital stories developed by CIS freshman students. Recognize the tremendous job growth in the computer industry, which is causing a shortage of computing professionals in the United States. Discover what women and minorities have contributed to computer science. Learn about local technology companies and job opportunities, the CIS undergraduate program at Buffalo State, and computer science education in general. Stop by for refreshments and enter your name in a raffle drawing. The first prize is an iPod donated by McGraw-Hill publishers.

Lehrer Dance at the Burchfield Penney on November 29, 30 and December 1

Get to know Buffalo's internationally touring professional dance company, Lehrer Dance, as they perform selections from their world-renowned repertoire in an intimate setting. Founder and artistic director Jon Lehrer will share his inspirations for choreography, stories about the first five years, and interesting details about each work. At the end of the performance, you will meet the dancers and have a chance to ask them questions about their work, life in the company, or whatever else you would like to know. Military and Veteran Recognition Night at Bengals Basketball

Intercollegiate Athletics will host Military and Veterans Recognition Night on Friday, November 30, at the women's and men's basketball doubleheader against SUNY Oneonta in the Sports Arena. Military personnel—active or veteran—are invited to show their military ID cards at the ticket gate to receive up to four complimentary tickets and be part of a special event recognizing all branches of the service at halftime of the men's game. Military personnel as well as fans attending the game are asked to bring a nonperishable food item in support of the Buffalo State Food Pantry. Tip-off for the women's game is 6:00 p.m. with the men's game to follow at 8:00. For more information, contact Tom Koller, senior associate athletics director, ext. 6514.

Winter Storm Preparedness

In the wake of Hurricane Sandy and nor'easter threats, and with winter just around the corner, it is time to begin preparing for winter weather, if you have not done so already. The CERT Task Force welcomes Aaron Mentkowski, meteorologist from WKBW-TV, to discuss these subjects on Thursday, November 29, at 9:30 a.m. in Cleveland Hall 418. The topics of discussion will be winter weather hazards, Buffalo weather history, Hurricane Sandy, and power outage preparations.
