Tell Students: Study in Thailand This Summer

Next Monday, February 14, at 3:30 p.m. and Tuesday, February 15, at 5:00 p.m. in Upton Hall 404, students can learn how to earn six credits by participating in a three-week program in Thailand during the month of July. During the trip they will visit ancient temples, see traditional craftspeople at work, attend a Thai culture, language, and ethics course, and volunteer with local children providing sports, hygiene, literacy, and arts activities. Finacial aid and scholarships are available for this program.

German Experimental Cinema

German Experimental Cinema of Buffalo State College presents "Futuristic and Contemporary Visions," today, Tuesday, March 22, and Thursday, March 24. Both events are free.

Today, Tuesday, March 22, at 7:30 p.m. in Bulger Communication Center East:
Arthur Lennig, SUNY, Albany, introduces The Complete Metropolis (Fritz Lang, 1927) and delivers a talk "At Last, What is Really Going On in Lang's Metropolis."

On Thursday, March 24, at 7:30 p.m. in Bulger Communication Center East:
Robert Reimer, University of North Carolina at Charlotte, will introduce the film The Edge of Heaven (Fatih Akin, 2007). His talk is titled "Fatih Akin's The Edge of Heaven: Dis/Connections)."

Faculty: It's Time to Apply for a Provost's Incentive Grant

Apply now for a Provost’s Incentive Grant to help fund your research or creative activity. Applications are available for all tenured and tenure-track faculty members and must be submitted to the Provost’s Office by February 24 at 4:00 p.m.

Awards of up to $1,500 are available to assist with travel, purchase of materials, conference fees, and other support for scholarly, research, and creative activities. Research and creative activities should be accomplished from March 15, 2011, to March 15, 2012.

A selection committee of representatives from the faculties of the four schools will review all applications and recommend awards based on the criteria of benefit to the faculty member’s professional development, benefit to teaching, and service to the academic department.

Call for Artwork: Women's History Month Exhibition 2011

The Buffalo State Women's Studies Interdisciplinary Unit is planning its fourth annual exhibition to recognize Women's History Month. The exhibition will be on view in E. H. Butler Library's lobby display cases for the month of March. We are seeking artistic and creative works (paintings, photography, ceramics, jewelry, costumes, books, poetry, etc.) from Buffalo State women (faculty, staff, students, and alumnae). If you have an item(s) you would like to loan for use in the exhibition, please contact Barbara Vaughan at ext. 6317 or vaughabj@buffalostate.edu. The last date for submission is February 27.

Buffalo State Volunteers to Offer Free Tax Preparation Services

Volunteers at Buffalo State College will offer free tax preparation services this tax season to individuals and families of Western New York with gross incomes of less than $50,000 per year. Buffalo State is one of eight sites partnering with the United Way of Buffalo and Erie County’s Creating Assets, Savings, and Hope (CASH) coalition to offer free tax services in 2011.

Help is available from fully-trained volunteer preparers starting January 31 through April 13 on the Buffalo State campus in Bacon Hall 106A. Walk-in preparation will be offered on Wednesdays from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., while appointment-only service will be available Mondays and Tuesdays from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Appointments can be requested by calling ext. 5907.

Residents and families are asked to bring photo identification, social security cards, wage and earning statements and a copy of last year’s Federal and State returns if available.
