Patrice Cathey, director of the Liberty Partnerships Program, served as principal investigator and author on a successful $2.25 million grant proposal for the program's 2022–2027 grant cycle. The Liberty Partnerships Program at Buffalo State, the first Liberty program established by the New York State Education Department in 1988, will serve both Lafayette International High School and Herman Badillo Bilingual Academy, with an emphasis on college entrance and successful workforce development for all students. This is the sixth consecutive successful grant proposal by Ms. Cathey, who has directed the program since 2001.

Daniel Cunningham, Professor Emeritus, Mathematics

Daniel Cunningham, professor emeritus of mathematics, has just published his paper "On Forcing over L(R)" in the Archive for Mathematical Logic (AML). The paper is available online and will soon be assigned to an issue. The AML is a refereed journal that publishes research papers on mathematical logic and set theory.

In set theory, the method of forcing consists of extending a set theoretical universe M, called an inner model, to a larger universe M* that contains new sets that are not in the old universe M; however, there are forcing extensions that add too many new sets. In particular, virtually all nontrivial forcing extensions of the inner model L(R) do not satisfy the axiom of determinacy (AD), simply because such forcing adds too many new sets. A natural question to ask is, When can one use a forcing extension to add only a small number of new sets to L(R) and then obtain an inner model (of the extension) that satisfies AD? In his paper, Dr. Cunningham shows that this can be done and provides examples of such extensions.

Paul Cohen developed the forcing technique to prove the independence of the axiom of choice and the continuum hypothesis from Zermelo–Fraenkel set theory. For his work in set theory, Dr. Cohen received the Fields Medal, which is awarded every four years on the occasion of the International Congress of Mathematicians to recognize outstanding mathematical achievement. Ever since Dr. Cohen introduced the forcing concept to set theory and mathematics, forcing has been seen by the general mathematical community as a subject of great intrinsic interest, but one that is technically forbidding except to those whose specialty is in set theory. Books and papers have been published to alleviate this misperception.

Yola Monakhov Stockton, Assistant Professor, Art and Design

Yola Monakhov Stockton, assistant professor of art and design and coordinator of the photography and documentary studies program, led a free cyanotype workshop for Buffalo’s East Side residents on July 23 and July 30 at a community center located within New Mount Ararat Temple of Prayer on Jefferson Avenue.

Three Buffalo State College photography students assisted Monakhov Stockton in organizing and overseeing the event. Twenty individuals—from young children to elderly residents—participated. The workshop, created in partnership with artist Renee Brown and her organization Dreamspace, was intended as a healing activity for the community most affected by the May 14 mass shooting at the Tops supermarket on Jefferson Avenue that killed 13 people and injured three others.

Both three-hour workshops focused on a photographic printmaking process and a restorative activity called “Remembering in Blue,” which was inspired by the literary genre of the blues poem. The process involves coating craft paper with a working solution of light-sensitive chemistry and allowing it to dry in low light. While the paper dried, participants prepared materials for printmaking, including drawings on transparency, cut-out shapes, and objects of personal significance. The prints resulted in blue-and-white images that will be included in two exhibitions this fall: the campus’s Anne Frank Project and at the Parsonage gallery in Searsport, Maine.
