John R. Torrey, Assistant Professor, Philosophy

John R. Torrey, assistant professor of philosophy, was elected to the Board of Ethics for the City of Buffalo in September. He is the only academic on the board as well as the only member who has conducted academic research on ethics. In 2020, Dr. Torrey served on a panel formed by Mayor Brown to study and recommend police reforms in response to that summer’s demonstrations against police misconduct. This service opportunity allows Dr. Torrey to continue doing public philosophy in the community and to continue the urban-engaged mission of Buffalo State.
