Lin Xia Jiang, professor of art and design and a faculty member with Buffalo State's Global Studies Institute, gave an invited virtual artist presentation, “Visual Documentary and Social Commentary Values of Plein Air Landscape Painting,” through the SUNY Plattsburg Visiting Artist Program on November 30. His recent body of plein air paintings was used as a case study focusing on the social, economic, and cultural changes of rural small town Americana along Route 56 in Upstate New York.

Frances Gage, associate professor of art history and a faculty member with Buffalo State’s Global Studies Institute, delivered the paper “Snow Architecture and Technological Marvels: Environment and Machines in Federico Zuccari’s Dimora di Parma and in the Mantuan Nozze of 1608,” at the conference “Celebrations at Court: Ephemeral Objects, Materials and Machineries in the Early Modern Period,” held at the University of Copenhagen, in Copenhagen, Denmark, November 2 and 3. In her paper, Dr. Gage investigated a case study of the early modern response to extreme climate conditions during one of the most severe global temperature declines of the Little Ice Age (ca. 1250–1850), the Grindelwald Fluctuation (1560–1630).

Garrity, senior systems programmer in Information Technology, delivered a captivating presentation, “Notable Women in Technology: Leaders and Innovators You Should Know!” at the 2023 SUNY Technology Conference, held in Lake Placid, New York, June 19–22. The session guided participants through a fascinating journey, highlighting pioneers such as Ada Lovelace, recognized as the world’s first computer programmer. The discussion extended to influential women in technology across both the corporate realm and within SUNY today. Joining the session as co-presenters were Holly Heller-Ross, founder of SUNY WIT, representing SUNY Plattsburgh, and Lucy Walker from SUNY New Paltz.

Garrity, senior systems programmer in Information Technology, proudly represented SUNY Buffalo State as she took the lead in managing a panel presentation, "Contributions and Challenges of SUNY Women in Technology," at the 2023 SUNY ITEC Wizard Conference on Thursday, November 16. Notable panelists she gathered from across SUNY included Odette Fung from SUNY Albany, Deb McClenon from SUNY Oneonta, Krystal Perlman from SUNY Brockport, and Holly Heller-Ross, the founder of SUNY Women in Technology (WIT), who represented SUNY Plattsburgh.

Kristen Mruk, special assistant to the provost and senate, was honored as the 2023 Hall of Fame inductee at the SABAH Starlight Night Auction and Gala on Friday, November 17, at the Buffalo Convention Center. SABAH’s Hall of Fame honors the legacy of those exceptional individuals or organizations that have provided unparalleled support and commitment to SABAH. The Hall of Fame was established to annually recognize those who, for at least a decade, have worked tirelessly to promote the values of the organization, have dedicated their time and/or financial resources, and have sought to educate the public regarding the needs of those in our community challenged by disability. Ms. Mruk has dedicated 25 years of volunteer service to the organization through SABAH's adaptive ice skating and hockey programs as well as off-ice events and recreation activities.
