Every year, individuals comment that they enjoyed learning what others were doing and as a result, new collaborations were developed.

A page designated to the event will appear on theResearch Foundation’s Web site. The date for titles and abstracts/descriptions to be submitted electronically is Tuesday, September 30. To participate, please complete the online form.

All faculty and staff are invited to organize an exhibit to present current research, creative activity, or other scholarship. Individual, departmental, or group exhibits are welcome.

Banner to Replace STARS in Early August

Posted:

Banner will replace STARS as the official system of record at Buffalo State the first week of August. While the Banner implementation team will be busy finalizing the transition over the next few weeks, Banner is still on track for summer grading.

Early in the transition, access to some of the reports that you may be used to getting from STARS will be limited. Reports that were deemed most critical based on survey responses from faculty and staff will be prepared first. If you need a specific report(s), send a detailed message torequest@buffalostate.edu. If there is an equivalent report that you used to get from STARS, please reference the report by name or number.

Banner Support will offer training classes to help in the transition. See the CyberQuad registration page for class schedules. If you would like one-on-one training, please contact Banner Support, 878-3434. Please do not contact the Registrar’s, Financial Aid, or Admissions offices for Banner training unless directed to do so by those offices. Most “how to” questions should go to Banner Support unless they are questions that you have routinely asked one of the Enrollment Management offices in the past.

Banner Support expects issues to arise during the transition period. Please direct all queries and requests for help to Banner Support, 878-3434. Be assured that all questions will receive a reply. E-mail or voice mail messages will normally receive a response within an hour or two.

For general questions about the Banner implementation project, please contact the Banner Project manager, Don Erwin, 878-3424.

SUNY Budget Update

Posted:

From the President
As you know, in May we were very concerned about budget reductions called for by Governor Paterson in response to New York State’s fiscal situation. After lengthy discussions, a revised SUNY budget was approved by the Division of Budget. While this budget calls for reductions in spending, it is not nearly as drastic as the original scenario.

This coming academic year, Buffalo State will suffer a budget cut of just over $2 million, resulting in an annual budget of $80 million. We will manage this reduction by applying our expected revenue increase of $1.3 million and a utility offset of approximately $800,000 toward the reduction.

Barring further reductions after the November legislative session, the college will not have to take any extreme actions and will be able to fulfill the commitments made during the past academic year. However, the state has asked us to limit our spending and manage it over the course of the year.

Therefore, we are applying a hiring slowdown and will be reviewing hires and expenditures quarterly. This stepped approach allows us to manage the state’s spending caps and also provides a cushion in the event of a mid-year reduction.

For the first quarter, we have released 18 positions as follows:

  • One faculty (most other appointments have already been made)
  • Four administrators, including two deans
  • Eight professional support staff
  • One nurse
  • One police investigator
  • Three support staff

No formal restrictions have been placed on travel or other expenditures; however, we will be more deliberate with approvals.

Obviously, it is prudent to be cautionary in our approach, given New York State’s fiscal climate. We appreciate the support and understanding of everyone. If you have questions or concerns, please contact Stan Kardonsky, vice president for finance and management.

I thank those in the Buffalo State College community who participated in the evaluation of President Muriel Howard during the spring. Many of you met with evaluators or submitted reviews of the president’s leadership and service as part of a routine five-year formal review process established by the State University of New York. I am pleased to report that interim Chancellor Clark has given President Howard a highly positive review. This assessment was based on information gleaned from meetings with faculty, staff, administrators, union leadership, student government representatives, and members of the College Council, College Foundation, and Alumni Association.
