Buffalo State Tobacco-Free Campus Policy

Posted:

From the Vice President for Student Affairs
Members of the campus community are reminded of Buffalo State’s tobacco-free campus policy, adopted at the request of the College Senate in spring 2011. The policy is available on the Weigel Health Center website. It is important to note that adherence to the tobacco-free policy is the responsibility of all Buffalo State students, faculty, staff, contractors, and visitors, who are expected to comply voluntarily with this policy. Members of our campus community are encouraged to respectfully inform others about the policy in an ongoing effort to enhance awareness and encourage a culture of voluntary compliance. We invite those interested in helping create a culture of compliance to become a tobacco-free ambassador by attending one of the educational sessions described below.

It is also important to note that in the spirit of respect for all members of our community, disciplinary action will not be taken for violations of the campus policy. Instead, education about cessation resources will be provided along with encouragement to willingly refrain from use of tobacco products on campus. The Employee Assistance Program (EAP), working with Weigel Health Center, has obtained cessation products that have proved effective for those seeking to quit their use of tobacco. Information about cessation resources is available through EAP and Weigel Health Center.

You Can Help. Volunteer to Be a Tobacco-Free Ambassador
Tobacco-free ambassadors help promote the tobacco-free policy by taking an active role in informing people that a tobacco-free policy is in effect. A large majority of Buffalo State students and employees support a tobacco-free environment, so we are inviting volunteers to become informed of effective ways to speak up when they see tobacco being used. To volunteer, please call the Health Promotions office at ext. 4719 or sign up online. You will be notified once the training sessions have been scheduled.

For more information about the tobacco-free campus campaign, please contact Charles B. Kenyon, associate vice president and dean of students, ext. 4618.
