ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

Posted:

Campus leaders will take the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge on Thursday, September 4, at 12:45 p.m. in the Student Union Plaza in honor of those who are battling the disease of ALS. Terry Stephan-Hains, director of the Weigel Health Center, lost her husband in 2010 to this terrible disease. Her sister-in-law lost her battle with ALS last August.

To support those who continue to struggle with this disease, we have come together as a community to raise funds for the ALS-Therapy Development Institute (ALS-TDI). ALS-TDI is one of the leading groups performing research to find the cause and cure for ALS. Please come and cheer on your campus leaders! Ashleigh Sutherland, USG president, will take the challenge for all students and will donate a portion of her check as president. Please come to cheer everyone on and to donate whatever you can to this great cause. See you there!

Checks will be accepted at the event and should be made out to ALS-TDI. You can also donate online at www.als.net or www.teamhains.com.

AFP 2014: Karima Amin, Storytelling for Joy and Justice

Posted:

The Anne Frank Project is delighted to have Karima Amin, local storyteller, as one of three featured speakers at AFP 2014 on Monday, September 8, from 9:30 to 10:50 a.m. in the Donald Savage Theater and Communication Building.

Storytelling for Joy and Justice
Knowing that every culture has its stories, I believe that storytelling is a perfect medium for teaching about the customs, traditions, and history of a people…. Listeners come to know that we are united by common human experiences in spite of our differences. The differences we encounter daily may involve race, age, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, ethics, and gender.

While personal stories are great, fables and folktales can be just as important and powerful. After listening to several fables and folktales from a variety of cultures, attendees will be invited to discuss how any one of these stories could be used to positively influence a social justice issue.
