2014 Fine Arts Faculty Exhibition and Reception

The annual Fine Arts Faculty Exhibition is on display in the Czurles-Nelson Gallery in Upton Hall through Monday, October 27. The Fine Arts Department will showcase the works of its diverse and talented faculty in art history, painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, and sculpture. A reception will be held in the gallery on Thursday, October 23, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. This event is free and open to the public.

Food Pantry Donations: Thank You

Thanks to all who donated to the Buffalo State Food Pantry during the Homecoming Food Drive. It was a great success. Chartwells has graciously agreed to house the food pantry again this year. Additional thanks also go to our athletes who collected the food, organizer Tom Koller, and the Rotaract Student Organization, which is in the process of sorting and organizing the food.

Faculty Development Workshop: Designing Backwards and Creating Authentic Assessments - October 7 and 8

This workshop will address the concept of using backward design to link assessments to course objectives, rubrics, and learning experiences in an online environment. We will also discuss and evaluate the benefits of providing students with authentic assessments.

This workshop will be offered on Tuesday, October 7, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. and Wednesday, October 8, from 10:00 a.m. to noon. Both will be held in Bulger Communication Center 120.

Tell Students: Flu Vaccine Clinic October 7

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that all students, especially those who have a chronic medical condition such as asthma or diabetes or who are currently on prednisone, should receive a flu shot.

A flu vaccine clinic will be held on Tuesday, October 7, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Campbell Student Union. Insurance companies that might cover the vaccine at this clinic include Independent Health, Cigna, Aetna, CVS/Caremark, Merck/Medco, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Medicare Parts B and D, and Fidelis.

Students must present a valid health insurance card. Others must pay the cost of $31.99 by cash or check.

The flu clinic is arranged through the Weigel Health Center. Please call Debbie Sarratori, assistant director of medical administration, at ext. 6711 with questions.

Health and Activity Program Sign-Up

Weigel Health Promotions will sponsor an eight-week Health and Activity Program centered on exercise and nutrition for students, faculty, and staff to help promote healthier lifestyles. A limited number of Fitbit activity trackers are available for student participants to borrow. Students will also complete fitness assessments and attend educational sessions and events. Faculty and staff participants are welcome to attend educational sessions and events throughout the program but will not complete fitness assessments. If you're interested (or if you know a student who may be interested), please fill out an online interest form or refer students to Health Promotions, ext. 6725, to sign up.

Intermediate Clickers: Connecting Clickers to Blackboard - October 16

When joined, clickers and Blackboard offer a great way to take attendance, track student progress, and manage courses. This workshop on Thursday, October 16, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. in Bulger Communication Center 104 will demonstrate the integration features between TurningPoint clickers and Blackboard. Following the 20-minute introduction, ample opportunity for hands-on practice, questions, and course-management practice will be available. Facilitated by Tim Sager and Bill White.

Visiting Artist Emile Desmedt to Speak at Buffalo State

The Buffalo-Lille Association Inc. and the Dr. Margaret E. Bacon Visiting Artists Fund present Emile Desmedt, internationally recognized artist from Tournai, Belgium, who will speak on campus October 16 and 18.

Well known for his sculptural work in clay, metal, and glass, Desmedt teaches at the Academy of Fine and Decorative Arts in Tournai. He has won international accolades and participated in numerous workshops abroad, including in Canada, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Finland, France, Lebanon, Niger, and Tunisia. His works have been acquired by the Societe Nationale de Credit a l'Industrie, the French Community of Belgium, the Province of Hainaut, the City of Laval (Canada), the Museum of Faenza (Italy), the Museum in Louvain-La-Neuve, and the Taipei Fine Arts Museum (Taiwan).
