Master's Defense Seminar: Melissa Boler, Forensic Science

Posted:

Melissa Boler, a master's degree candidate in forensic science at Buffalo State, will present her master's defense seminar, "Hsp110 and Hsp7 in Wild Type and 11485 Drosophila When Exposed to Stressful Environments," at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, October 16, in Classroom Building B119. Light refreshments will be served before the seminar. This event is supported by the Faculty-Student Association.

Abstract
Heat shock proteins are a type of molecular chaperone protein that are significant in assisting in the refolding of denatured proteins and escorting terminally misfolded proteins to the proteasomes for degradation. Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and Polyglutamine diseases (e.g., Huntington’s disease) are all diseases that can be caused by aggregation of misfolded proteins, so clearance of the misfolding proteins is essential. The over-expression of heat shock protein Hsp70 along with co chaperone Hsp110 plays a vital role in many of these neurological diseases.

The protein expression levels of wild type and 11485 Drosophila lysates were observed in this study. 11485 Drosophila differ from the wild type Drosophila in that they are heterozygous for the hsc70Cb00082 disruption allele. The protein expression levels from western blots probed with antibodies of Hsp70 and Hsp110 were compared under stress-induced environments by heat shocking the lysates. The western blot data was also compared to mRNA data from q RT-PCR to understand the gene expression regulation with these specific proteins.

Findings suggested that female 11485 Drosophila over-compensated not only when heat shocked but also under non heat shock conditions, an unexpected finding. They also suggested that these genes are most likely regulated at the transcription level. Understanding how the heat shock proteins, specifically the Hsp70 family, work is the key to future studies that might lead to therapeutic and drug discoveries of many neurological diseases.

Buffalo State's TLE TeachLive Simulation Lab Open House

Posted:

The Buffalo State TLE TeachLive simulation lab, housed in Ketchum Hall 211, will be formally unveiled by President Conway-Turner during a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday, October 16, from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. The TeachLive lab has been under development for the past year. Initiated and tested by faculty members in the Exceptional Education Department, this mixed-reality teaching environment is ready to be shared with the wider campus and area education communities. Open house lab simulations will follow the ribbon-cutting ceremony at 4:00 p.m. TLE TeachLive simulation sessions will be offered every 15 minutes until 5:15 p.m. in Ketchum Hall 211. The open house will include the opportunity to participate in lab simulations, as well as posters and discussions describing the many ways that TeachLive can be used across content and academic disciplines. Teacher education faculty, school administrators, and faculty members from other disciplines are encouraged to attend.

Please e-mail or call the Exceptional Education Department at ext. 5317 if you have questions or would like to register in advance for an October 16 lab simulation session so we can meet your scheduling needs. RSVPs are appreciated.

To learn more about TeachLive, please visit the Exceptional Education Department website.

About TLE TeachLive
The TLE TeachLive simulation lab is a mixed-reality teaching environment supporting teacher practice in classroom management, pedagogy, and content. TLE TeachLive began at University of Central Florida and is currently used across the country to prepare or provide professional development on instruction and management routines to improve teaching methods and behavior management practices of preservice and in-service teachers at all levels. TLE TeachLive is also being used to prepare teachers in the use of STEM-related instructional strategies.

TLE TeachLive uses adult avatars for one-on-one conversations and to help teacher candidates and other professionals engage students in various scenarios including working with students who do not speak English as their primary language and students who demonstrate behaviors on the autism spectrum.

Newly developed adult avatar scenarios provide the opportunity for practicing and aspiring teachers, administrators, social workers, business-related majors, and students from other majors to rehearse parent-teacher conferences, annual evaluation meetings, critical conversations (e.g., performance feedback and reviews, job interviews, leading administrative meetings, facilitating professional developments, and hosting problem-solving conferences), and many other scenarios.
