Lecture, Book Signing: Dialogues in Gouache with Thomas Paquette - March 13

Posted:

Thomas Paquette, known for his evocative paintings of nature, will explain how years spent hopping freight trains around the country and hitchhiking to Alaska sharpens the aesthetic sense during this lecture on Friday, March 13, from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the Burchfield Penney Art Center. Paquette will show how dialogues are set up between his gouache and oil paintings and how "mistakes" are welcomed in finding fresh territory to explore on the canvas or paper. Following his presentation, Paquette will sign copies of his books Gouaches and On Nature's Terms: Paintings of Thomas Paquette Commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Wilderness Act. Admission is free with M&T Second Friday.

Paquette’s works range from large canvases to tiny gouache paintings on paper that are exhibited and represented in many museum collections. He has received several fellowships and honors, including artist residencies at the American Academy in Rome, the Aegean Arts and Cultural Exchange (Greece), and three U.S. National Parks (Acadia, Yosemite, Rocky Mountain). At his studios in Maine and Pennsylvania, he completed several large public and corporate commissioned works. His paintings have also been selected to hang in 16 U.S. embassies on five continents. Paquette lives at the edge of the Allegheny National Forest in northwestern Pennsylvania.

For further information, please contact Kathy Gaye Shiroki, curator of museum learning and community engagement, ext. 3549.

Watercolor Workshop: Painting Uncorked at the Center - February 15

Posted:

Painting Uncorked, a fun painting experience with step-by-step instruction from watercolorists Jody Ziehm and Beverly DiPalma, will be held Sunday, February 15, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. in the Burchfield Penney Art Center. Participants will create their own watercolor, no experience necessary. Set in a casual atmosphere with wine and hors d'oeuvres, this workshop will provide a friendly approach to Ziehm and DiPalma's instruction. Participants will be inspired by Charles E. All materials will be provided: paint, brushes, paper, and aprons. Wine and hors d'oeuvres are included. You will leave with your own original 11-by-14-inch painting, matted and ready to frame.

Watercolor Workshop: A Gouache of Your Own

Posted:

Watercolorist Linda Toomey will demonstrate opaque watercolor techniques with the use of gouache, after which participants will experiment with gouache and create small landscapes during this workshop on Sunday, February 8, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. in the Burchfield Penney Art Center at Buffalo State.

Toomey is interested in small gouache landscapes, her inspiration stemming from the play of light on water, especially coastal and river marshes. She hopes to take the viewer to a natural world of quiet solitude, contemplation, and peacefulness. Toomey earned her bachelor of science and master of science degrees in art education at Buffalo State. Last year, she exhibited at the Buffalo Society of Artists and had a solo exhibition at Breakwater Gallery in Cape Vincent, New York. Her work is in numerous public and private collections, including Women and Children’s Hospital and Roswell Park Cancer Institute, and in Kanazawa, Japan, Buffalo’s sister city, whose dignitaries received gifts of her paintings from Mayor Byron Brown and the Albright-Knox Art Gallery.

To register for this workshop, please contact Kathy Gaye Shiroki, ext. 3549, or download the registration form (PDF) from the Burchfield's International Center for Watercolor website.

Visual Arts Board Selections: Artists' Self-Portraits from the Gerald Mead Collection

Posted:

The Visual Arts Board has organized an exhibition of works in various media from the collection of Gerald Mead to begin the spring 2015 semester of exhibitions in the Dr. Margaret Eschner Bacon Student Gallery in Upton Hall. Mead is an alumnus of Buffalo State and an adjunct professor in the Design Department. The works chosen reflect several disciplines taught in studio classes at the college.

Because all the works either depict or refer to the artists who created them, they can broadly be described as "self-portraits." The artists’ rationale for creating self-referential work varies widely. Some have used their own image throughout their career, while others have used themselves as models out of ease or convenience. Artists have also been the subject of their own work to address topics such as body image, identity, alienation, and place.

The artists in the exhibition are Candace Camuglia, Caitlin Cass, Matt Grote, Robert Harris, Andrew Hershey, Robert Jones, Pat Kewley, Kate Parzych, Anthony Pismarov, Caesandra Seawell, and Tom Van Dusen, as well as Buffalo State alumni Derek Gabryszak and Aaron Ingrao and former adjunct faculty members Anders Fernbach and Jason Seeley.

The exhibition is on view through Friday, February 6.
