Tell Students: Second-Language Acquisition Support in the Regular Classroom - Spring Workshops

This workshop on second-language acquisition will help you understand the types of support needed by second-language learners in a regular classroom setting. We will focus on lesson planning, teaching, and assessment strategies for all core content areas. If you are required to take the EAS exams for teacher certification, this workshop will help you better understand the Second-Language Acquisition portion of the exam. This workshop is available to participants campuswide and will be repeated three times during the semester. All workshops will be held on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to noon in Bacon Hall 116:

Spring 2015 'Conversations in and out of the Disciplines' Lineup

The 2014–2015 "Conversations in and out of the Disciplines" series continues Friday, February 6, when Amy McMillan, associate professor of biology, presents “The Creature from the River Styx: The Life Story of the Hellbender Salamander in New York” in Ketchum Hall 320 from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. A short, informal wine-and-cheese reception will be held after the talk. Everyone is welcome.

Please also mark your calendars for the other talks this spring:

M. Scott Goodman, chair and associate professor of chemistry, will present "Two-Step Spin Crossover Behavior in the Iron(II) Complex of Tris(3-methylpyrazolyl)methane: What Could This Title Possibly Mean?" on Friday, March 20.

Carolyn Guzski, assistant professor of music, will present “Manhattan Project: Desegregating the Metropolitan Opera in the 20th Century” on Friday, April 3.

Tim Bryant, assistant professor of English, will present “Will You Play with Me? The Pleasures of Paranoia from the Cold War to Contingent Culture” on Friday, May 8.

All talks will be held at 3:00 p.m. in Ketchum Hall 320.

Tell Education Students: Germany for Educators Program

All currently enrolled teacher education students—including undergraduates and graduates seeking certification at any grade level and within any academic discipline—are invited to apply for the upcoming Germany for Educators program, sponsored by the School of Education.

Germany for Educators participants will observe and teach in local schools; examine the German education system and teacher certification process; live with host families; and tour local communities, galleries, museums, and historical sites.

Participants will travel from Buffalo to Stuttgart, Germany, from June 26 through July 15 (dates may change depending on flight availability), including several overnight stays in either Berlin or Munich. Space provided, the program will also be open to Buffalo area educators interested in learning more about German culture and education.

A general information session will be held Tuesday, February 24, at 3:00 p.m. in Bacon Hall 305. Snacks will be provided, and all are welcome to attend. Also, please consider opening your classroom for a five- to 10-minute Germany for Educators presentation for your students. Call ext. 3008 if interested.

Please encourage your students to consider this wonderful opportunity to study, teach, observe, explore, and discover. Interested individuals can e-mail Tamara Horstman-Riphahn, executive assistant to the dean of the School of Education, view the program brochure, or download and submit the application to Bacon Hall 306.

Registrar's Office: Spring 2015 Waitlists Turned Off January 27

Waitlists for spring 2015 were turned off at the end of the second day of classes, or 11:59 p.m. Tuesday, January 27. Students no longer have the option to add themselves to a waitlist. Students who are already on a waitlist will continue to have the opportunity to register for the class should a seat become available before the end of the drop/add period, which is 11:59 p.m. Sunday, February 1. Additional information on waitlisting can be found on the Registrar's Office website.

HEA Series: 'Social Media in Higher Education: Implementation and Impact'

The Higher Education Administration Department is pleased to announce a three-part series, "Social Media in Higher Education: Implementation and Impact – A Conversation with Paul Gordon Brown," on February 12 and 13.

Paul Gordon Brown is a Ph.D. candidate and educator specializing in the impact of technology, social media, and design on college student learning and development. He is an independent speaker and consultant, delivering conference keynotes and speaking to diverse audiences nationally and internationally (most recently in Dubai) on topics related to social and digital technology.

Brown has over 10 years of professional experience in higher education and student affairs in a diverse array of functional areas including residential education, honors programs, academic advising, college athletics, and student activities. Currently serving as an instructor in the higher education program at Merrimack College, and formerly at Boston College, Brown has extensive experience in the classroom and working in blended student and academic affairs environments. His research interests include first-year students; honors, high-ability, and high-achieving students; learning communities; residential curricula; and social media, technology, and design. 

Brown will lead a series of conversations over two days focused on maximizing the use of social media in higher education and understanding its impact on students. Faculty and staff members are welcome to attend. RSVP to Amy Wilson, assistant professor of higher education administration.

Korean Headdress Exhibition

An exhibition of Korean headdresses will be on view in the Fashion and Textile Technology showcase on the third floor of the Technology Building from Tuesday, February 3, through Friday, February 13. The campus community is invited to a reception and meeting with Sanghee Park, visiting scholar from Korea, on Tuesday, February 3, during Bengal Pause (12:15–1:30 p.m.).

The exhibition will help the Buffalo State community understand the traditional dress (Hanbok) culture in Korea and is funded by the Faculty-Student Association.

Community Emergency Response Team Drill: February 17

The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) will hold a training session and drill on Tuesday, February 17, from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. in the Classroom Building. The drill will take place in B wing of the first floor and in C122. Participating CERT members will be wearing green vests, and there will smoke and some noise during the drill. Every step will be taken to minimize disruptions to building occupants. Please do not be alarmed. This is only a drill.

Campus House Reopens for Spring

Campus House reopens this week with networking hours from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Lunch service resumes on Monday, February 2, at 11:00 a.m. Campus House membership is open to all Buffalo State faculty, staff, emeriti, alumni, and friends of the college. Becoming a member is easy; simply complete and return our membership invitation.

Established in 2001, Campus House was developed as a teaching laboratory for hospitality students as well as a social club for the Buffalo State community. Members can stop by for lunch or coffee, watch students at work in the open state-of-the-art kitchen, or reserve space for business or social occasions.

The management team at Campus House is planning to "wow" you with some new food and beverage offerings during networking hours this week. We are committed to service standards that exceed your expectations as we greet another class of hospitality students in 2015.
