Color Harmony: Making the Most of a Limited Palette - November 7

Posted:

Watercolorist Kateri Ewing will present "Color Harmony: Making the Most of a Limited Palette" on Saturday, November 7, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the Burchfield Penney Art Center.

Mixing colors that glow and don't turn muddy is one of the trickiest challenges when learning to paint with watercolor. The fewer pigments used, the clearer and more harmonious the results will be. Ewing will demonstrate the use of three different limited palettes of five or six pigments to show the vast variety of colors that can be achieved. Participants will look into the differences between pigment characteristics such as transparency, lightfastness, granulation, and staining and the importance of achieving a balance between warm and cool pigments. They will create a color chart from a selection of pigments from their own paints after creating a variety of limited palettes using the information learned.

Ewing says her work isn’t so much about creating art or making a statement as it is an avenue to convey how thoroughly in awe she is of the natural world around her. She expresses that awe in richly detailed paintings of songbirds, treasures of the plant kingdom and sweeping landscapes of the places she loves. Largely self-taught and committed to her continuing development as a painter, she says her technique evolves with each painting as she imagines ways to share the beauty and uniqueness of her winged and botanical subjects.

Ewing has lived in Western New York for more than half her life, and counts Europe, the Midwest, the Desert Southwest, and Texas as previous homes. In preparation for painting these days, she regularly walks and photographs the woods, meadows, and waterways in two of her favorite places: Wyoming County and her beloved Knox Farm State Park in East Aurora, a park she helped rescue from New York State’s budgetary ax a few years back.

A writer as well as an artist, Ewing freelances for various publications. An accomplished poet, she was a featured reader at the Eden Mills (Ontario) Writers’ Festival in 2008. For her artistic endeavors and for her dedication to the community, she was honored with the 2012 Mary and Gil Stott Award at Roycroft. She teaches regular workshops in watercolor and drawing at MUSEjar in East Aurora, as well as private lessons from her home studio. Her first solo exhibition, On a Wing, was held at Meibohm Fine Arts in East Aurora in April and May 2015.

Grace Meibohm, owner of Meibohm Fine Arts, represents Ewing locally and on the Internet. "Kateri's knowledge of her subjects and her passion for them is evident in her work, which is fresh, direct, and appealing," Meibohm said. "We keep looking forward to what will be rendered next."

To register for this workshop, please contact Kathy Gaye Shiroki, curator of museum learning and community engagement, 878-3549, or download the registration form (PDF) from the Burchfield Penney website. The cost is $30 for members and $40 for not-yet members. Part of the International Center for Watercolor.

Watercolor Workshop - Core Strengthening: The Principles of Form - October 24

Posted:

Artist Jennifer Koury will present "Core Strengthening: The Principles of Form" on Saturday, October 24, from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Burchfield Penney Art Center.

What is watercolor without its core? Core shadows are the basis for creating forms. They are the darkest part of the shadow on the form and are essential to making your paintings dramatic, three-dimensional, and full of light. Both beginners and advanced painters can strengthen their core principles by learning to simplify nature into planes and geometric shapes. Discover why light falls on objects in specific patterns. Core shadows, reflected light, and the shadow created by the object on its surroundings will be demonstrated. Paint values, temperature, and saturation of color to turn forms and create depth will be discussed. Still life objects will be provided. Personal styles will be encouraged.

Jennifer Koury delights in the natural world's play of light and color on forms. She derives pleasure from watercolor's whimsical properties—color bleeding, reticulation, and natural paint sediments—allowing her imagination to take her where she wishes. Koury has enjoyed a rewarding career as a dedicated painter and freelance illustrator. She is published in both children's and adult books. A previous finalist in the Chautauqua Annual Exhibition of Contemporary Art, she has exhibited her paintings in both solo and gallery exhibitions. Her work is featured at George Washington's Mount Vernon and the Yuma Regional Medical Center in Arizona. After graduating from Virginia Commonwealth University in painting and printmaking, Koury continued her studies to graduate from the Art Center College of Design in Passadena, California. She resides with her family in the Buffalo area, where she is inspired by the natural beauty of Western New York.

$55 members / $65 not-yet members. Part of the International Center for Watercolor.

To register for this workshop, please contact Kathy Gaye Shiroki, curator of museum learning and community engagement, 878-3549, or download the registration form (PDF) from the Burchfield Penney website.

Three Watercolor Masters: What Homer, Hopper, and Burchfield Want to Say to Us - October 18

Posted:

Philip Koch, the Burchfield Penney Art Center’s second artist in residence, will present a slide lecture on the watercolors of Winslow Homer, Edward Hopper, and Charles Burchfield on Sunday, October 18, from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. in the Peter and Elizabeth C. Tower Auditorium.

Koch will analyze examples of each artist's work to explain why their paintings are so visually powerful and why their work has important lessons for us today.

Koch is a prominent contemporary landscape painter with a long-term interest in the work of Charles Burchfield. A native of Rochester, New York, he turned from abstraction to landscape painting early in his career, inspired by the richness of Western New York’s countryside. He has been granted unprecedented access to the privately held former studio of Burchfield’s friend Edward Hopper, enjoying 15 residencies there since 1983. Koch is a senior professor at the Maryland Institute College of Art. His paintings are in the permanent collections of 15 American art museums.

This event is free with museum admission and is part of the International Center for Watercolor.

Pocket Sketching Workshop: October 14-16

Posted:

The Burchfield Penney Art Center will offer a three-day Pocket Sketching workshop with instructor Kath Macaulay October 14–16, from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Whether you're a raw beginner or a professional artist, Pocket Sketching is for you. In just three days, participants will learn the technique to sketch landscapes, still life, and people. This is a hands-on workshop where participants begin indoors and work the last day on location. Exercises are aimed at working quickly and fearlessly. The class immediately enters advanced watercolor techniques because of the use of the water soluble pen. Macaulay offers frequent demonstrations and critiques. Lots of one-on-one support.

The 4-by-6-inch format totally portable and non-obtrusive. It can go anywhere in a pocket, purse, or fanny pack; hiking, kayaking, standing in line, riding a horse, journaling through Europe, or sketching a 'designer dinner' in a restaurant.

Kath Macaulay holds a B.S. in biology and worked for many years in medical research or medical marketing while painting competitively until deciding to devote her time to teaching. Her major art instruction experience is from four masters: Robert N. Blair of Buffalo, New York; Carl Cogar of Las Cruces, New Mexico; Nicholas Brigante of Los Angeles, California; and Bong Wai Chen of Portland, Oregon. Macaulay’s artwork is in collections throughout the United States and Canada with exhibitions in the U.S. and Mexico. She paints primarily en plein air using watercolor and has developed the painting technique Pocket Sketching, which she trademarked and teaches nationally.

Three-Day Breakdown

Day One: Technique with the Water Soluble Pen and Landscape
In the morning, participants will learn the technique for sketching with the water soluble pen, and then combine the pen with color using watercolors. No previous experience is necessary. Perspective lessons of contrast and color are included. In the afternoon, participants will work from photographs (furnished by the instructor) using both previous perspective lessons plus focal point and editing. This includes the use of wax, as used by John Singer Sargent in his watercolors.

Day Two: Still Life and People
In the morning, participants will begin with a still life emphasizing color, contrast, focal point, and the peculiar characteristics of the water soluble pen. Participants will learn how to edit in and out of a "gathered" still life. In the afternoon, concentration will be on the human figure.

Day Three: Plein Air
Paint outside and experience working among strangers, architecture, and color. Prove to yourself you can do this anywhere, in 25 minutes or less, without being interrupted.

Part of the International Center for Watercolor. The cost for the three-day workshop is $150 for members and $170 not-yet members. The cost for one day is $70 members and $80 not-yet members.

To register, please contact Kathy Gaye Shiroki, curator of museum learning and community engagement, 878-3549, or download the registration form (PDF) from the Burchfield Penney website.
