Workplace Wellness Workshop: January 13

The Buffalo State Employee Assistance Program and the college Counseling Center are pleased to cosponsor the Winterim workshop "Mental Health Wellness and Self-Care at Work," presented by Karl Shallowhorn, on Wednesday, January 13, from noon to 1:00 p.m. in Classroom Building A 400. A Buffalo State alumnus and former PSC member, Shallowhorn is the director of community advocacy for the Mental Health Association of Erie County. He is the author of Working on Wellness: A Practical Guide to Mental Health and a well-known local speaker and blogger on mental health. Survive and Thrive: January 19

The Small Business Development Center presents “Survive and Thrive: Essentials for Starting Your Own Business,” a workshop covering all the essential information needed to start a business, on Tuesday, January 19, from 8:30 a.m. to noon in the Burchfield Penney Art Center (second floor). Specific topics will include creating a business plan; competition analysis; and tax, legal, and insurance issues. The workshop is free for Buffalo State faculty, staff, students, and alumni and U.S. military veterans and $20 for all others.

Registration will take place immediately before the workshop, from 8:00 to 8:30 a.m. To register in advance, please call the SBDC at 878-4030.

Introduction to Service Learning for Faculty and Staff: January 19

The Volunteer and Service-Learning Center (VSLC) will hold an Introduction to Service-Learning Workshop for faculty and staff on Tuesday, January 19, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Cleveland 418. This interactive session is for faculty new to service-learning pedagogy and the practice of incorporating a community-based project into a course. 

Topics will include

  • an overview of the theory and practice of service learning,
  • support with converting a course to include a community-based project,
  • discussion of effective methods of incorporating student reflection to connect the service and course learning.

Buffalo Society of Artists Exhibition: Opening Reception January 10

The Buffalo Society of Artists is celebrating its 125th year with a members exhibition in the Czurles-Nelson Gallery in Upton Hall. Twenty-four of the 58 works of art included in the exhibition are by Buffalo State alumni. Artist labels will indicate alumni with the color orange.

An opening reception will be held Sunday, January 10, from 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The reception is open to the public. The exhibition runs through Saturday, January 16.

Connecting with English Language Learners: February 4

English language learners (ELLs) make up an increasing percentage of Buffalo State's student population. These students bring rich histories to the classroom and offer opportunities for faculty members to explore content from numerous perspectives. At the same time, ELLs have challenges that native speakers don't. Explore ways to help ensure that ELLs' linguistic needs are met during this workshop on Thursday, February 4, at 12:15 p.m. in Butler Library 181B.
