Please invite students in your courses to join the Women and Gender Book Club. The first book we will read is Shrill: Notes from a Loud Woman, by Lindy West. Ms. West, a feminist writer, addresses topics in a humorous and insightful manner, including fat stigma, comedians who tell rape jokes, and fighting back against Internet trolls. Copies of the book are available to student participants for only $5.

The book club will meet three times during the semester on Friday afternoons to discuss the books along with faculty from the women and gender studies program. Discussions will be fun and informal. The kick-off meeting will be on Friday, March 3, from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. (room TBA). For more information or to sign up, please contact Jenn Hunt, associate professor of psychology, at huntjs@buffalostate.edu.

'Spread the Word to End the Word': March 1-3

Posted:

Join the Buffalo State chapters of Best Buddies and the Student Council for Exceptional Children, along with the Exceptional Education Department, in support of the national campaign to “Spread the Word to End the Word." The R-word, retard or retarded, is slang for the term mental retardation. The purpose of the campaign is to raise peoples’ awareness of the derogatory use of these words and their negative effects on people with intellectual disabilities, as well as on their families and friends. The campaign also aims to change attitudes of segregation and hate to attitudes of acceptance and respect. Buffalo State's Best Buddies and SCEC chapters prefer to focus on people and their gifts and accomplishments, and to dispel negative attitudes and stereotypes. We hope you do, too.

Please come and sign the pledge. Banners and computers will be available in the Campbell Student Union lobby on March 1, 2, and 3 from 12:15 to 1:30 p.m. for the Buffalo State community to “Spread the Word to End the Word.”

Also, please join us for "A Night of Inclusion" on Thursday, March 2, from  6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the Campbell Student Union Assembly Halls 1 and 2, including musical entertainment by the gifted Sujeet Desai and a film presentation by Starlight Gallery. Refreshments will be served
