Water Service Interruptions: March 26

Posted:

Campbell Student Union, Cassety Hall, Chase Hall, Classroom Building, Porter Hall, Technology Building, and Twin Rise Center, North, and South Wing may experience brief, intermittent water service interruptions on Monday, March 26 (spring break), as part of the ongoing Bishop Hall Renovation project. Water lines, routes, and shut-off valves will be tested to isolate the working area for the Bishop Hall water main replacement scheduled from late May through mid-July.

Occupants of affected buildings are asked to use a neighboring building when water is not available and can be assured that service will be restored shortly.

Your patience and understanding are appreciated as work progresses on this important project. Please visit the Facilities Construction and Maintenance website for additional information about this and other construction projects on campus.

Tell Students: Housing Deposits

Posted:

In an effort to make the application process easier for students to live on campus, the Residence Life Office has adjusted the way it collects housing deposits. The cost will remain $125, but students now pay at the end of their housing application instead of using a separate tab in Banner. Please direct students to visit the "MyHousing" link under the Student tab in Banner to start the housing application. To complete the application, students will be directed to a payment page to submit their housing deposit. The previous tab labeled "Housing Deposit" no longer exists.

Please direct students who have questions to 878-3000 or reslife@buffalostate.edu.

Governor Cuomo Directs Flags to Half-Staff

Posted:

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo has directed that flags on all state government buildings be flown at half-staff today, March 19, to honor the four New York National Guard members who were killed when the helicopter they were flying crashed in Iraq on Thursday, March 15, 2018.

"On behalf of all New Yorkers, I extend my deepest condolences to the friends and family of these courageous New York National Guard members," Governor Cuomo said. "We join their loved ones and fellow service members in honoring the sacrifice they have made, so that others may live free in New York and across the entire nation."

The four New York Air National Guard members, assigned to the 106th Rescue Wing, were stationed at F. S. Gabreski Air National Guard Base in Westhampton Beach. The service members were killed, along with three others, when their HH-60 Pave Hawk rescue helicopter crashed near the city of Qaim in Iraq. There is no evidence of enemy action involved in the crash, and the incident is under investigation, according to the Department of Defense.

The service members killed in the crash were

  • Capt. Christopher Zanetis, from Long Island City
  • Capt. Andreas O'Keeffe, from Center Moriches
  • Master Sgt. Christopher Raguso, from Commack
  • Staff Sgt. Dashan Briggs, from Port Jefferson

The 106th Rescue Wing specializes in air, land, and sea rescue of pilots and other military personnel.

More information is available on the governor's website.

Academic Success: Centralized Review Process for Undergraduate Academic Standing

Posted:

One of the changes resulting from the 2017 Academic Affairs reorganization was a centralized process for the review of undergraduates’ academic standing.

Previously, deans’ offices used college policy to review the academic standing of students from their schools. When Provost Perreault joined Buffalo State, she worked with the associate deans and Academic Standards to improve consistency across schools by developing uniform academic standing review guidelines based on college policy and a student’s time at the college. The schools used these guidelines for their review process from spring 2016 to spring 2017. Following the reorganization in fall 2017, the guidelines were further used by the assistant provost for academic success to review undergraduates’ academic standing across schools.

The centralized review process included the creation of a Dismissal Appeals Board (composed of the associate deans and the assistant provost for academic success), which collectively reviews all undergraduate dismissal appeals. Students who are unsuccessful in their appeals to the board may further appeal to the provost if they can present new information or believe there was a violation of due process.

The fall 2017 centralized review process has resulted in consistency for all students across schools. Nearly 1,400 undergraduate records have been reviewed since the implementation of the guidelines. The centralized review process has led to more rapid information-sharing across campus related to student standing, faster response times for academic advisers to assist probationary students with schedule adjustments, and the collection of a comprehensive data set that allows for improvements to student support services through data-driven decisions.

We will continue to review the centralized academic standing review process for undergraduates each semester. If you have ideas, suggestions, or observations, please contact Heather Maldonado, assistant provost for academic success.

If you would like additional information about the academic standing process at Buffalo State, please visit the Academic Standards website.
