Artists on the Road Series - 'StitchBuffalo: Finding or Found? April 26

Posted:

Dawne Hoeg, a lecturer in the Art and Design Department, will present the final Artists on the Road: Travel As a Source of Inspiration lecture for spring 2018, "StitchBuffalo: Finding or Found?," a discussion of how one idea became a journey, on Thursday, April 26, from 12:15 to 1:30 p.m. in Upton Hall 230.

Hoeg created StitchBuffalo in 2014. “I started to notice the change in the neighborhood, mostly with the women standing at the bus stops and on the sidewalks of the West Side,” Hoeg said. “They were beautifully dressed; I loved what they were wearing. So, I started StitchBuffalo as a platform to connect with these women, create community, and to share the common language of textiles arts that I knew must exist between us…I believe Buffalo was calling me to do this important work.”

Her “artist project” turned into an entirely volunteer-run 501(c)(3) organization with a brick-and-mortar presence at 1215 Niagara Street, where textile arts create opportunities for social inclusion and financial empowerment for refugee women. The stitching community today includes over 60 women from Bhutan, Burma, Nepal, and Angola. Stitching skills are taught in weekly workshops, and the women can take their work home to complete it. StitchBuffalo then sells the completed products. Each piece has the name of the woman who made it on the tag, and the woman gets the majority of the total sale.

“StitchBuffalo gives women who fall through the cracks an opportunity to develop community, to develop skill, to develop a whole life,” Hoeg said.

Hoeg grew up south of Boston, Massachusetts, on the coast. Her interests have always involved handwork of some kind. She earned her bachelor of science from RIT, where she studied packaging design, and then went on to earn a master of fine arts in fibers from UMass Dartmouth. "My great grandmother was a milliner and seamstress, my grandmother a seamstress, my mother and her five sisters are home sewers. It is in my DNA,” she said.

The Artists on the Road series is co-sponsored by the Art and Design Department and the International and Exchange Programs Office. For more information, please contact Carol Townsend, associate professor of design and coordinator of design foundations, 878-4986.

Seeking Host Families for Dortmund, Germany Students

Posted:

The Buffalo Dortmund Sister City Student Exchange Program invites German high school students from our sister city of Dortmund, Germany, to spend three and a half months with a host family in the Buffalo area while attending high school. The program has been bridging the cultures between these two cities for 40 years. (President Katherine Conway-Turner hosted a reception for the Lord Mayor Ullrich Sierau along with a delegation of 18 members of government and higher education on April 15.) This year’s group will arrive on Sunday, August 19, and depart on Sunday, December 9. A host family's primary responsibility is to provide a bed, food, and encouragement to a student in what will prove to be an unforgettable experience.

The program offers activities scheduled throughout the duration of the student’s visit, and also includes funding for the participation of a host brother or sister for each activity, with some activities allowing more family members to attend. Events in past years have included Darien Lake, Sky High Adventures, white water rafting in Letchworth State Park, Niagara Falls, group dinners, tours of City Hall with a welcome from Mayor Byron Brown, sailing on Lake Erie, a Buffalo Sabres game, and an Aufwiedersehen (departure) dinner at the Anchor Bar. These activities are meant to build a sense of community within the group, and again come at no cost to the host family. The program also provides $600 to each host family, to make it easier on families to show their student around.

We are still in need of hosts for the following schools: St. Joe's, Mount Mercy, Bishop Timon, Sacred Heart, and Mount St. Mary's.

If you are interested in learning more about the program or how to host, please contact Lynn Engle, lecturer in the Modern and Classical Languages Department, (716) 989-8849.

What a tremendous opportunity for you and one of our Dortmund students to build lasting friendships and lifelong memories. Thank you for your interest in the program. Please consider becoming involved in bringing two very similar cities with two very similar groups of citizens closer together!

Screening and Panel Discussion - 'Fire in the Heartland: Kent State, May 4th, and Student Protest in America' - April 26

Posted:

The Burchfield Penney Art Center and Buffalo State College will present a film screening and panel discussion of Fire in the Heartland: Kent State, May 4th, and Student Protest in America, a compelling documentary about the fatal shootings at Kent State, on Thursday, April 26, at at 7:00 p.m. in the Burchfield Penney Art Center’s Peter and Elizabeth C. Tower Auditorium.

On May 4, 1970, National Guard troops opened fire on unarmed antiwar protesters at Kent State University in Ohio, killing four students and wounding nine others, including Buffalo resident Thomas Grace, assistant professor of history at Erie Community College. The shootings shocked the American public, triggering a nationwide wave of campus strikes and protests that involved several million people, most of them young.

A panel discussion moderated by Dr. Grace, author of Kent State: Death and Dissent in the Long Sixties, will follow the film. Panelists include John Abromeit, associate professor of history and social studies education; and Gail Radford, professor of history, and Michael Frisch, professor emeritus of history, at the University at Buffalo. Copies of Dr. Grace's book will be available for purchase and signing, courtesy of Talking Leaves.

Admission is free for students, faculty, and members of the Burchfield Penney and $5 for the general public. This event is sponsored by the Burchfield Penney Art Center and the Buffalo State departments of History and Social Studies Education, Political Science, and Sociology.
