Information Security Awareness: Data Risk Classification Policy

Posted:

Buffalo State's Data Risk Classification Policy states: "Buffalo State has classified its physical and electronic data into three risk-based categories for the purpose of determining who is allowed to access the information and what security precautions must be taken to protect it."

Please view the policy here: Data Risk Classification Policy. Review the guidelines to ensure that your electronic files are stored in an appropriate location, and be sure to avoid e-mailing information classified as "restricted" or "private."

A very helpful document, Guidelines for Storing and Transmitting College Data, provides a practical reference for determining where to store various types of campus data and which types of data can be safely e-mailed.

Any questions related to the policy or guidelines may be directed to Judi Basinski, associate vice president for data and analytics and chair of the Data Governance Committee.

Academic Success: Undergraduate Dismissal Process Improvement

Posted:

In an effort to improve the accuracy and timeliness of information provided to students about their academic standing and related college matters, the Academic Success Office has worked with the Registrar's Office and RITE to develop a new academic standing code in Banner: "dismissal pending."

Undergraduates who have been identified for academic dismissal based on spring 2018 grades have had their academic standing updated to "dismissal pending" in Banner so that anyone authorized to view students' records can see their most accurate status and provide appropriate advice. Once this semester's academic dismissal appeals and First Semester Recover sign-up processes are completed in mid to late June, students' academic standing will be updated once again to reflect their final academic standing with the college.

Additionally, the Academic Standing section of the college's website has been updated to include more information related to the various academic standing outcomes a student may experience, including contact information for assistance with and deadlines for academic dismissal appeals and First Semester Recovery sign-up.

Please note: this semester's deadline for academic dismissal appeals and First Semester Recovery sign-up is 3:00 p.m. Thursday, June 14.
