Here's one easy thing you can do this week to help the students you advise: 

More than three decades of research on the causes of student attrition have demonstrated that engaged students who build meaningful relationships on campus stay in school at higher rates and have a better shot at college success. 

By reminding your advisees of the countless opportunities to get involved on campus, you can help them start building those connections. 

Here are just some examples of ways students can get involved: 

• Join a club in one of their areas of interest or get involved in student government
• Connect to a peer mentor in their first year (spots still open for spring 2019; if interested e-mail peermentoring@buffalostate.edu)
• Participate in undergraduate research opportunities, like the Early Undergraduate Research Opportunity (EURO) Program
• Find a job or internship on campus using the Career Development Center's ORCA database to search openings
• Participate in service-learning opportunities (such as Bengals Dare to Care Day and Alternative Spring Break) offered through the Civic and Community Engagement Office
• Participate in athletic activities, such as recreation and intramural programming
• Attend events hosted in the residence halls or participate in the Residence Hall Association

Just one positive engagement experience might make an enormous impact during the student's time in college and beyond!

Cultural Café is a monthly event series that brings together international and domestic members of the Buffalo State community over conversation, culture, and coffee. Meet new people and find common ground with other globally minded members of the community in a casual, relaxed atmosphere.

Cultural Café occurs monthly on Fridays from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. in the Global Lounge on the third floor (southeast quad) of Butler Library.

The Undergraduate Research Small Grants Program provides up to $400 to assist students in carrying out their research, scholarly, or creative activities during the academic year; up to $600 may be requested for a single project that involves two or more students. Funding may be used to reimburse the cost of travel, supplies, or other expenses necessary to conduct the project but is not intended for travel to a conference to present research findings or as salary for the student(s).

Students receiving small grant awards will be required to participate in the 21st annual Student Research and Creativity Conference scheduled for May 3 and 4, 2019. The deadline for submission of applications by students is Monday, February 25; mentors have until Wednesday, February 27, to complete their portion of the application. Applications for the Small Grants Program are completed through the Undergraduate Research website.
