'Queer Fashion: Style and Fashion beyond the Heteronormative Status Quo' - April 4

Posted:

Please join us for the talk "Queer Fashion: Style and Fashion beyond the Heteronormative Status Quo,” presented by Michael Mamp, associate professor of fashion, interior design, and merchandising at Central Michigan University (CMU), on Thursday, April 4, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. in Technology Building 160.

Dr. Mamp is a fashion historian who focuses on marginalized groups such as women and the LBGTQ community. Specifically, his research explores the intersection of fashion with queer identity and experience. He will discuss his research on the contributions to fashion throughout history by members of the LBGTQ community, with a focus on twentieth-century fashion as it relates to marginalized or minority individuals.

Dr. Mamp serves as the director of the fashion merchandising and design online undergraduate degree programs and is an affiliate faculty member of women and gender studies at CMU. His research includes queer fashion and theory and the development of narrative-rich art cloth that expresses issues related to art, personal experience, social justice, and culture. He holds a bachelor of arts from CMU, a master of arts from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and a Ph.D. from Iowa State University. Before his appointment at CMU, Dr. Mamp worked for 14 years in various senior management roles in the fashion industry for companies such as Limited brands, Gap brands, Bloomingdale's, and Saks Fifth Avenue.

His talk, part of Pride Week at Buffalo State, is sponsored by the Fashion and Textile Technology Department, the Buffalo State Pride Alliance, and the Bengal Allies Committee and is funded through the Grant Allocation Committee.
