Tell Students: Spring 2019 Deadlines - Withdrawal from College, Leave of Absence

Please remind students that today, Friday, May 10, is the deadline for the following paperwork:

  • Withdrawal from College
  • Leave of Absence (LOA)

There is no grace day for these deadlines. Students who are taking an LOA for medical reasons can complete the LOA paperwork with no additional signatures. They do not need to go to the Weigel Wellness Center. Any student who is not returning should be reminded to submit paperwork to the college.

Collection of Worn American Flags for Proper Disposal: May 13-20

In support of a statewide flag retirement initiative, Buffalo State’s University Police Department (UPD) will collect worn and tattered American flags at the Chase Hall Dispatch Desk from Monday, May 13, to Monday, May 20. The collected flags will be disposed of as part of the Memorial Watchfire, hosted by the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 103, on Sunday, May 26, at the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse, New York.

All collected flags will be properly folded before disposal and delivered to the Senator Walter J. Mahoney State Office Building, 65 Court Street in Buffalo, for transport to the Memorial Watchfire. Questions about this undertaking may be e-mailed to UPD.

College Senate Caucus: Election of 2019-2020 Senate Officers - Tomorrow

The College Senate Bylaws and Elections Committee will host the annual College Senate Caucus—the election of Senate officers for the upcoming academic year—tomorrow, May 10, from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. in Caudell Hall 110.

Candidates for officer positions must be senators who will be in office for the 2019–2020 academic year. Candidates should be present at the caucus to announce their candidacy. Alternatively, e-mails of interest for committee chairs may be e-mailed to Amy Rosen-Brand, chair of the Bylaws and Elections Committee, by 11:00 a.m. May 10. Candidates who e-mail their interest must specify which standing committee(s) they wish to chair. Should a chair seat be contested, an election will be held expeditiously after the caucus.

The final College Senate meeting of the spring 2019 semester will be held tomorrow, May 10, at 2:00 p.m. (not 3:00 p.m.) in Bulger Communication Center 215. Please note the one-hour time change. The meeting agenda is posted on the College Senate website.

The College Senate Office is located in Cleveland Hall 211. Joseph Marren, professor of communication, serves as chair of the College Senate for the 2018–2019 academic year. Please stop by the office, call 878-5139, or e-mail Vincent Masci, assistant to the College Senate, with questions or for general information.

Call for Marchers, Volunteers: First-Year Convocation - August 23

Online registration for marchers and volunteers participating in First-Year Convocation is now open. Buffalo State’s annual First-Year Convocation for fall 2019 will be held on Friday, August 23, at 9:00 a.m. in the Sports Arena as part of Orientation 102. This event gives our newest students an opportunity to be officially introduced and welcomed to the campus community and from that moment on embrace Buffalo State College as their alma mater.

This event requires the enthusiastic participation of our campus community to succeed. All departments and offices are encouraged to allow their staff members to support this event as a work assignment for that morning by marching in convocation or volunteering to assist with the event. Faculty, librarians, and professional staff members are urged to process in regalia to demonstrate Buffalo State's commitment to incoming students and welcome the Class of 2023. Please register online by Friday, August 16, if you are available to march or volunteer for the event.

Volunteers must wear their Orientation T-shirts. Your assistance on this day is greatly needed and deeply appreciated.

Note regarding regalia: A limited number and variety of gowns are available for loan through the Academic Affairs Office. Please provide your own hood and cap, either rented or owned, if possible.

Today: EOP Honors Convocation Celebration

The Arthur O. Eve Educational Opportunity Program will celebrate the exemplary academic performance of its students today, May 9, at the 52nd annual EOP Honors Convocation at 3:30 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center at Rockwell Hall. This year's theme is "We the People: Believe, Inspire, Achieve." Highlights of the program include the high points of EOP during the year, as well as the presentation of special awards to students, staff, and faculty.

This year, two individuals will be recognized as distinguished alumnae: Crystal Rodriguez, '05, assistant professor in the Social Sciences Department at Bronx Community College, and Cassandra St. Vil, '05, CEO of Amateka College Preparatory Public Charter School in Washington, D.C. The EOP Honors Convocation ceremony recognizes students who have obtained a 3.0 semester or cumulative GPA during the 2018 calendar year. The campus community is invited to attend. A catered reception will immediately follow.

Buffalo State Rotaract Club Thank-You: H.O.P.E. Haiti Fundraiser 2019

The Buffalo State Rotaract Club would like to send a sincere thank-you to all who showed their support for the H.O.P.E. Haiti Fundraiser 2019. We were able to raise a grand total of $510.75. All proceeds will be donated to the people of Borgne, Haiti. Tina Colaizzo-Anas, associate professor of health, nutrition and dietetics, was the lucky winner of the $100 Visa gift card. On behalf of the Rotaract Club officers, we cannot thank you enough for all your support to help make this fundraiser a true success.
