Hosts Needed for Korean Summer Program

Posted:

Through Buffalo’s sister city cooperation with Yeongcheon, Korea, SUNY Buffalo State is pleased to host 20 Korean students on campus for our American Language and Culture Summer Program. An important part of this program is providing our guests with American home stays. Through these stays, students are exposed to American home life, experience American culture firsthand, and have an authentic opportunity to practice their spoken English.

Hosts will provide two meals (Saturday night and Sunday morning), one outing that showcases some aspect of Western New York/American culture, a single bed (students can share a room but not a bed), and transportation to and from Buffalo State.

Pickup is planned for Saturday, July 27, at 2:00 p.m. in Cleveland Circle. Drop-off is planned for Sunday, July 28, at noon in Cleveland Circle.

To help defray the costs associated with hosting a student, hosts will be offered a stipend of $50 per student.

Please contact Elizabeth Summers, (717) 439-5437, with questions or to become a host.

Bengal Wellness Challenge: July 3-August 7

Posted:

The Institute for Community Health Promotion, the Weigel Wellness Center, and the Employee Assistance Program have teamed up to kick-start a walking club for the Buffalo State community. Walking a half hour a day, combined with eating plenty of fruits and vegetables, can help lower your cholesterol, blood pressure, and risk for chronic disease. Join us for some fresh air, a bit of nature, and invigorating exercise as we walk around either Hoyt Lake or the History Museum three days a week for six weeks.

Beginning tomorrow, July 3, we will meet at noon at the corner of Elmwood Avenue and Rockwell Road for a 30- or 40-minute walk. We will meet in the same place at the same time every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday through Wednesday, August 7. Those who are interested may have the Weigel Wellness Center measure their weight and blood pressure before our walk on July 3 and then again after the challenge ends on August 7. Free EAP water bottles will be handed out at the first walk, while supplies last. A limited supply of healthful, properly portioned take-out lunches will be provided for $5 at the Bengal Kitchen and can be picked up after the walk. Please contact Michelle Lockett, project coordinator with the Center for Health and Social Research, with questions.

Governor Cuomo Directs Flags to Half-Staff

Posted:

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo ordered flags on state government buildings to be flown at half-staff starting today, June 28, in honor of Sgt. James G. Johnston, 24, a Trumansburg, New York, soldier who died as a result of injuries sustained in Uruzgan Province, Afghanistan, on June 25.

Sgt. Johnston was assigned to the 79th Ordnance Battalion (explosive ordnance disposal), a part of the 71st Ordnance Group at Fort Hood, Texas. He was one of two soldiers who died of wounds sustained from small arms fire during combat operations.

"On behalf of all New Yorkers, I extend our sympathy to the friends, family, and fellow soldiers of Sgt. Johnston," Governor Cuomo said. "His death is a reminder of the sacrifices members of the military make to protect the freedoms and the values that this state and this nation were founded upon."

Governor Cuomo has directed that flags at New York State facilities be lowered to half-staff in honor of and in tribute to New York service members who are killed in combat or die in a combat zone.
