Today: Biology-GLC Seminar - 'The Genomics of Adaptation to Salt Marsh Habitats in Sparrows'

Posted:

Please join the Biology Department and the Great Lakes Center for the seminar "The Genomics of Adaptation to Salt Marsh Habitats in Sparrows," presented by Jennifer Walsh, postdoctoral associate in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology in the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, today, October 28, from 3:00 to 3:50 p.m. in Technology Building 160. All students, staff, and faculty are welcome.

Abstract
Theory suggests that different taxa having colonized a similar, challenging environment will show parallel or lineage-specific adaptations to shared selection pressures, but empirical examples of parallel evolution in independent taxa are exceedingly rare. My research employs a comparative genomics approach to identify parallel and lineage-specific responses to selection in North American sparrows that have independently colonized tidal marsh habitats. My work highlights the interplay of shared and lineage-specific selection pressures in the colonization of challenging habitats and confirms theoretical expectations that steep environmental gradients can drive repeated and rapid diversification in birds.

Charles Rand Penney Speaker Series - 'Rust and Stone: Stonewall 50 and the Madeline Davis LGBTQ+ Archive of Western New York' - Tomorrow

Posted:

The third biennial E. H. Butler Library Archives and Special Collections Charles Rand Penney Speaker Series, in association with the Burchfield Penney Art Center and Buffalo State’s Bengal Allies, presents Jeffry Iovannone tomorrow, November 2, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. in the Burchfield Penney Art Center's Tower Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public.

In this lecture, based on his book project about gay liberation in Buffalo, New York, Dr. Iovannone uses the Madeline Davis LGBTQ+ Archive of Western New York to complicate the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Inn riots. Through an analysis of the founding of the Mattachine Society of the Niagara Frontier, Buffalo's first gay and lesbian civil rights organization, he challenges the significance of Stonewall within the history of the American LGBTQ rights movement, arguing for a holistic narrative of LGBTQ+ history that takes into account the lives and experiences of LGBTQ+ people in Rust Belt cities such as Buffalo. Finally, he discusses how Buffalo State’s Madeline Davis Archive provides a blueprint for LGBTQ+ social change outside of coastal American cities today.

Dr. Iovannone completed his Ph.D. work in American studies at SUNY at Buffalo and is currently a full-time lecturer in interdisciplinary studies as well as the coordinator of the Women and Gender Studies Program at SUNY Fredonia. He has extensively mined Buffalo State’s Madeline Davis and associated LGBTQ+ collections for his previous, current, and upcoming research and publications.

A reception will follow the talk and Q&A.

Free parking will be available in the Burchfield Penney Art Center lot.

For additional information, please contact Dan DiLandro, head of archives and special collections in Butler Library, 878-6308.
