Biology-GLC Seminar: 'A Recent Invader Finds Its Ecological Niche in the Great Lakes: ?Hemimysis anomala, the Bloody Red Shrimp' - March 13

Posted:

Please join the Biology Department and the Great Lakes Center for the seminar "A Recent Invader Finds Its Ecological Niche in the Great Lakes: ?Hemimysis anomala, the Bloody Red Shrimp," presented by Alicia Pérez-Fuentetaja, professor of biology at Buffalo State College, on Friday, March 13, from 2:00 to 2:50 p.m. in Bulger Communication Center 214. All students, staff, and faculty are welcome.

Abstract
Hemimysis anomala is one of the recent invaders to the Great Lakes from the Ponto-Caspian region of Europe. Originally introduced through ballast water from transoceanic ships, it has spread to shallow areas in all five Great Lakes, Lake Superior being the last to be invaded in 2017. An omnivorous organism that exhibits strong photophobia and a tendency to form swarms, the bloody red shrimp is occupying the nearshore niches of the lakes they invade, areas that are not used by the native mysid the opossum shrimp (Mysis diluviana). To understand the potential impacts of this new addition to the Great Lakes, we studied H. anomala’s diet and habits, as well as its capacity to dramatically alter food webs.

Understanding the 2020 Census: Census 101 and Census Help Desk

Posted:

"Understanding the 2020 Census" is a series of Daily Bulletin posts meant to help educate the campus about the 2020 census. Please share this information with your colleagues, students, and neighbors.

Census 101 (PDF, 1.5 MB)
The census is a count of all individuals living in the United States, regardless of age or citizenship status. This count has been done every 10 years since 1790. Beginning Thursday, March 12, households will have the opportunity to respond to the census survey online at my2020census.gov or by phone. Most communities will not receive paper forms in the mail as they have in past census years. Data collected in the census affects many aspects of our daily life, including

  • how many students receive Pell Grants;
  • federal funding for roads, bridges, and public transportation;
  • health-care services and programs offered within the community;
  • representation in the House of Representatives and state legislatures, as well as drawing the lines of school and legislative districts.

Census Help Desk
To educate and encourage participation, the Buffalo State Complete Count Committee has create a Census Help Desk. This resource will allow students, faculty, staff, and community members to ask questions and stop by to complete their census survey responses at locations throughout campus and the community. See where we will be on campus and in the community during the month of March. April dates will be released soon.

Stay up to date on the latest information about the 2020 census on the Civic and Community Engagement website, on our Instagram profile, and with the hashtag #buffstatecounts.

College Senate Vacancies: Call for Nominations April 13-17

Posted:

From the Chair of the College Senate Bylaws and Elections Committee
Two at-large College Senate positions, one University Faculty Senate position, and one University Faculty Senate alternate position will become vacant on August 31, 2020. All full-time faculty and professional staff members are eligible to run for these seats provided they meet other eligibility requirements (see below).

At-large senators represent the entirety of the college. University Faculty senators are senators within both the Buffalo State College Senate and the SUNY University Faculty Senate. The alternate attends SUNY University Faculty Senate meetings only in the absence of the university faculty senator.

A call for nominations and information about candidates’ statements will be posted on the College Senate website. The call for nominations begins at 12:01 a.m. Monday, April 13, and continues through 5:00 p.m. Friday, April 17. Elections for these positions will run from 12:01 a.m. Monday, April 20, to 11:59 p.m. Friday, April 24.

Senate elections conducted by the schools of Arts and Humanities, Education, Natural and Social Sciences, and the Professions as well as the Professional Staff Caucus (PSC) should be concluded before the College Senate election cycle (April 20).

Eligibility: Current College Senate members who are completing two consecutive terms in their respective positions are not eligible for reelection. For additional information on eligibility requirements, please consult the College Senate bylaws.

Campaigning: The College Senate Elections and Bylaws Committee strongly discourages using college e-mail services for campaigning. Please limit campaigning to the candidate statement posted on the College Senate website, available to the college community on Monday, April 20.

Please note: Individuals running for a senator position in another election may not also run for at-large senator or university faculty senator positions while the other election is being conducted. If the other election concludes during the period when nominations for at-large or university faculty senator are still being accepted, eligible individuals may self-nominate for either position.

If you are interested in being a candidate, please contact Vince Masci, assistant to the College Senate, 878-5139. We look forward to your participation in the vital process of campus governance.
