Register for a Manager Development Communities of Practice

Posted:

If you are a manager at Buffalo State College who is seeking an opportunity to problem-solve, discuss, and be supported in addressing management challenges and learning new management strategies, please contact Rebecca Eggleston, professional development assistant, to register for a Manager Development Community of Practice. Manager Development Communities of Practice are small groups of managers who engage in problem-solving-focused conversations every three weeks, facilitated by Jonathan Hulbert, director of leadership and organizational development, on how we can further improve management effectiveness. All conversations will be tailored to each Manager Development Community of Practice’s most pressing challenges and supported by additional free webinars, articles, and resources that can be accessed at any time. Managers will be placed in small groups based on shared challenges and positions to ensure they can connect with colleagues who are at the same level within the institution.

The community of practice for directors meets on Tuesdays September 28, October 19, November 9, and November 30 from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m.

The community of practice for assistant or associate directors or employees who manage at least one staff member, including student employees, meets on Thursdays October 7, October 28, November 18, and December 9 from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m.

NFTA Invites Feedback to Proposed Route Change by September 8

Posted:

The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority (NFTA) has informed Buffalo State College of a proposed adjustment to NFTA Metro Route #32 (Amherst). The adjusted route, planned for spring 2022, would eliminate the deviation to Buffalo State and is reportedly being proposed because of low boarding rates from campus and to reduce the ride time for other passengers on the route.

The campus will continue to be served directly by NFTA Metro Route #3 (Grant) and Route #20 (Elmwood). More information on NFTA’s proposed Bus Network Improvements is available on the NFTA website. The NFTA welcomes feedback on this and other proposed changes by Wednesday, September 8, via email at planning@nfta.com; phone at (716) 855-7211 (NFTA Customer Care); or U.S. mail to NFTA Service Planning, 181 Ellicott St., Buffalo, NY 14203.

Please Encourage First-Year Students to Complete the Survey

Posted:

As part of the Title III initiatives, all first-year students will receive an email during the second week of classes asking them to complete the First-Year Student Survey. Students will have until Sunday, September 12, to complete the survey. If you are interacting with first-year students, please strongly encourage them to complete the survey before the deadline.

After completing the survey, students will receive an email with access to and feedback on their results. Students' individual survey results will be transferred to the Bengal Success Portal. An automated flag will be raised for students who are experiencing numerous challenges, to trigger an immediate response from the support staff.

Based on the CSI results and the fall progress reports during the fourth week of classes, completion coaches, professional advisers, Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) counselors, and Say Yes counselors will be meeting with individual students to discuss their results and connect them to needed support services.

For instance, we will be able to distinguish students who are considering transferring out, need career planning support, need counseling services, are facing financial difficulties, or would benefit from tutoring. In addition, aggregate data will be used by various departments to better understand incoming students’ strengths and challenges.

Thank you to Provost Mayrose, the deans and associate deans, College Writing Program faculty members, UNC 100 faculty members, the Educational Opportunity Program, the Muriel A. Howard Honors Program, the Say Yes Program, Academic Advising, Student Leadership and Engagement, International Student and Scholar Services, and Intercollegiate Athletics for motivating students to complete this survey during the second week of classes. We also want to recognize staff members who assisted with this initiative: Sumanlata Ghosh, Julie DeWind, and Jeanne Guzy.

Lastly, thank you for helping communicate this message to our first-year students!

The more students that complete the survey, the more accurate the services they can receive.

To learn more about the Noel Levitz CSI or other Title III activities, please visit the Title III website or contact Agnes Zak-Moskal, interim assistant provost for academic success.
