Free Car Seat Safety Training: April 19

Posted:

A free car seat training session, led by Elizabeth O’Neill, Buffalo State College assistant professor of engineering technology and New York State child passenger safety technician, will be held Tuesday, April 19, at 1:40 p.m. in Buckham Hall A214. The training is open to faculty, staff, and students who wish to know more about car seat safety.

The session will include hands-on installation and information on types of car seats that should be used, how long can they be used, how a child’s age correlates with fit, and the correct way to install a car seat. Please email Elizabeth O’Neill or call (716) 878-9868 with questions.

Chemistry Spring 2022 Seminar Series: 'Screening of Near-IR Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) Dyes Using Quick Freezing-Induced AuNP Aggregates (QFIAAs)' - April 14

Posted:

Please join the Chemistry Department for the seminar "Screening of Near-IR Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) Dyes Using Quick Freezing-Induced AuNP Aggregates (QFIAAs)," presented by Carleigh Cimmerer, a graduate forensic science student, on Thursday, April 14, from 12:15 to 1:30 p.m. in Science and Mathematics Complex 151.

Seminar Abstract
Near-IR (NIR) surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is an emerging bioimaging technique that can be a safe alternative with a resolution better than current bioimaging techniques, such as MRI, CT, and PET. These can be hazardous with long-term exposure due to powerful magnetic fields or ionizing radiation. The success of NIR SERS bioimaging partially lies in the selection of highly sensitive NIR Raman reporters, which is essential to achieve highly resolved bioimaging from the body system. Researchers have synthesized and screened NIR dyes that can be used for NIR SERS bioimaging.1,2 NIR Raman dyes must satisfy three important conditions: strong absorption in the NIR region, strong binding to the surfaces of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), and excellent NIR SERS activity. AuNPs have been used as vital SERS substrates but must be aggregated to create "hot-spots" to produce strong SERS signals.

Thus, the AuNPs are often aggregated by adding salts or high-concentration of dye molecules themselves, which is largely due to the electrical neutralization of negatively-charged AuNP surfaces. However, these methods are difficult to control the aggregation of AuNPs, thus leading to unreliable SERS signals. We previously reported that moderate sizes of AuNP clusters could be prepared by quickly freezing citrate-capped AuNPs and thawing them at room temperature. 3 We discovered that QFIAAs prepared from AuNPs with an average diameter of 70 nm could not only act as excellent NIR SERS substrates but also remain suspended in a solution for a long time, so they could be used to detect analytes using NIR SERS. In addition, QFIAAs were stable without disintegration when stored for more than three months. This research has focused on the applications of QFIAAs in the screening of dye molecules with high throughput for NIR SERS bioimaging. In this talk, the effect of the capping agents on the formation of QFIAAs, the charge effect of dye molecules on their adsorption on QFIAAs, and the results of a proof-of-concept experiment on using QFIAAs to screen dye molecules for NIR SERS will be presented.

R.A.D. Women's Basic Self-Defense Classes Begin April 20

Posted:

Buffalo State College women are invited to participate in the R.A.D. Aggression Defense course, a four-week program of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques that begins on Wednesday, April 20, and continues each Wednesday through May 11 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. in Buckham Hall A114. It is open to faculty, staff, and students.

The R.A.D. System is a comprehensive course for women that begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction, and avoidance, while progressing on to the basics of hands-on defense training. R.A.D. is not a martial arts program.

Courses are taught be certified R.A.D. instructors and provide participants with a workbook and reference manual that outlines the entire physical defense program for reference and continuous personal growth. The 12-hour R.A.D. program is conducted in four sessions, and participants must attend all sessions.

If you have any questions about the program, please email University Police Lieutenant Richard Myers or call (716) 878- 6333. For more information or to register, please visit the Workshop Registration System

Call for Proposals: Anne Frank Project's 14th Social Justice Festival

Posted:

The Anne Frank Project is thrilled to host its 14th annual social justice festival, AFP 2022: Healing through Storiesin person on October 12, 13, and 14. We seek proposals from all disciplines, cultures, and communities reflecting on stories that have healed or will or can heal the personal, social, national, and global wounds caused by the pandemic. The sharing of unique skill sets, knowledge, and approaches to healing is an act of both social and personal justice. It was Anne Frank's wish to "repair the world." This year's festival is an opportunity for all of us to actively respond to that challenge. We need you and your healing stories now more than ever.

AFP invites presentations, workshops, art exhibits, and performances reflecting on this year's theme. In keeping with the kinesthetic and experiential pillars of the Anne Frank Project, we ask that all session proposals be crafted as one-third theory and two-thirds practice. Submit your proposal today.

if you have any questions or need any help with your proposal, please contact Jonise Hall, festival coordinator. Visit us at annefrankproject.com.
